AMD have released a nice video talking about Vulkan (and DirectX 12), it's also nice to hear Linux & SteamOS mentioned.

I have really been liking the direction AMD has been going, it's making me far more interested in them recently.

Their open source support seems to be improving at a rapid pace, and with them open sourcing more projects it's a pretty fun time to keep an eye on them.

Hope to see more nice videos like this from AMD.

As for the mentioned games, we have The Talos Principle, Ashes of the Singularity is coming to Linux, but it's still sad that Doom will probably never come to Linux. I fully expect Bethesda Softworks to be one of the last developers/publishers to come to our platform. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

It is really sad that id never got around to officially port Doom 3 and Rage, so I doubt they will port the new Doom as well. I was wishing for the spirit of John Carmack to carry on at id, making them release source for example. And as pointed out yet again in this video: Vulkan support is enabled already, so the graphics department is most likely not the driving factor that keeps them from supporting other platforms.

AMD is definitely looking more appealing as time goes on.

However, I must have misunderstood something. I though that if a game used Vulkan, we would just have it on Linux too... But that obviously isn't the case with DOOM.

Why? Doom is now OpenGL and it's not available on Linux either.

If only we were so lucky. Vulkan only guarantees a level playing field, developers still need to explicitly target Linux.

On the other hand, playing opengl or vulkan games via wine should give us almost native speeds.

A graphics API is only one bit of the puzzle, which is why it aggravates me when I see people claim a game using OpenGL or Vulkan instantly means a port as it creates hype and confusion. Not saying that's what you're doing of course as you clearly didn't know.

I actually had this argument in the linux_gaming reddit Discord channel. Gutigen claimed Vulkan would basically change everything and mean more ports, i disagreed and I got banned.

A graphics API does not equal a port. You need all the other pieces on top of developer AND publisher approval.

...Something like SteamOS official support for dual GPUs? :)

Edit: Oups! Sorry. I mixed this news with the 2.83 beta release of SteamOS and Liam's concern for a major SteamOS update... Still dual AMD GPUs on SteamOS would be great.

Actually Valve approached Bethesda about Doom 3 BFG Edition in order to have it as a launch title on Steam for Linux. Bethesda declined. Shame..

You probably mean readeon kernel driver. It is indeed superseded by amdgpu. RadeonSI is FOSS OpenGL implementation for AMD (based on Gallium3D). It works in combination with amdgpu kernel driver.

Currently things seem to be messy. Either various highly manual installation, or using amdgpu-pro package from AMD, which installs amdgpu through dkms module, but also installs closed OpenGL and Vulkan implementations.

From what I understood, that dkms module requires special compatibility layer (KCL), which won't be accepted upstream. So it will remain part of that dkms package, but now it's bundled with all other stuff. They plan to make it all more modular, but it didn't happen yet.
