So you like to be afraid? You like to soil your pants? Well then, here's a few must-have titles to try on Linux & SteamOS.
These are my personal picks and favourites. There's quite a number more, but these are the ones Iliked hated playing the most (Yes, I am a big wuss).
Among the Sleep
I finished the game in two sittings and wow. It is one of the games that has impressed me the most in recent years. Playing as a toddler really does make the gameplay and feeling of it different. You can see more thoughts from me on it here.
If you have been on the fence about this one, I wholeheartedly recommend to bite the bullet and pick it up.
Monstrum
Another Horror game done a bit differently. There is no set path, you don't know which particular monster is chasing you and you don't entirely know what you're doing.
You're on a ship drifting in the ocean and you need to find your way off it somehow.
Alien: Isolation
I love the Alien universe, have done for a long time. I highly recommend watching the Alien films before you play this one as it will really enhance the experience for you. You cannot miss this game. Being honest, I still haven't got it 100% because it terrifies me so much. I get cold sweats at the thought of playing this game.
Outlast
If you think you're tough mentally, this is definitely the one for you. I can't play more than a few minutes of this one as the atmosphere is so intense I can literally feel my heart trying to jump out of my chest. It's horrible, I hate hate hate it, but youmight be probably are a lot braver than me.

Best horror game played on Linux? Silent Hill under WINE (best horror game ever). Native game? SOMA.

It also plays around with some interesting themes and approaches. One of the best horror games I've played/seen.Just be careful with Knock-knock and White Night. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them until I very suddenly didn't. Knock-Knock has an odd timer mechanic towards the end, where it's entirely possible to end up not being able to finish the game without starting over; apparently, it's by design, but I've rarely felt more cheated by a game.
White Night is something I've only seen the beginning of and in a video played by others too, but that certainly was enough to make me realize it belongs in this conversation alright. I'm yet to find the courage to check it out properly.
The Cat Lady is almost becoming somewhat of a modern classic among those who are familiar with it. It's disturbing, scary and interesting.
Also I feel that Oxenfree deserves an honorable mention, because while not a horror game, it does pleasant spooky supernatural atmosphere better than many straight-up horror games.
White Night is very good, but there is some delay/issues on the controls during camera changes in the Linux port making one specific segment about halfway through the game basically impossible to get through. I tried for hours but eventually had to abandon the game.

I really like Alien Isolation but it's not very scary for me.

Anyone had the chance to play Fran Bow and LISA? Not sure if they're strictly speaking horror games, but they seem to be pretty disturbing.

Outlast and Alien made me too tense to press on :B
I really enjoyed SOMA, even in the monster chases felt a bit token and unnecessary. And, as Yahtzee points out, it can be quite obnoxious to both have to avoid looking at a monster whilst also watching for it. The first one I didn't mind so much because it was noisy and had lights to give you an idea of where it was.
That said, I mainly loved the story, and playing The Talos Principle right after put me in a great mood for navel gazing :P

You can add Neverending Nightmares to the list, it's very disturbing, you play a guy in a nightmare that can't wake up, there's dead people hanging from trees, zombies, giant babies chasing you, small girls with swords, it's definitely one of the strangest games I've ever played.

So far I've played Amnesia TDD and Outlast. I also played Outlast Whistleblower and Alien Isolation but I did that on a friend's Windows PC (all roommates playing in turns in a university dorm).
I loved them, all of them! We're also going to play SOMA soon, but again on that Windows PC since it's a kick-ass laptop and every setting works at ultra, and my laptop on the other hand, running Arch Linux, is quite aged and can only run the newer ones at low-medium.
All those games that I mentioned above support Linux, which is great because IMO they are the best / some of the best horror games available. Even the older ones are great, since horror games tend to look very good and also be pretty light on resources. (Maybe it has to do something with the fact that that most environments are poorly illuminated and almost never set outdoors.
Oh, and there's also Penumbra which I haven't played, but I do own them on Steam (All of them), and they do support Linux.
IMO this genre is fully "supported" on Linux and it really is on par with Windows. And that's great, I really enjoy playing a horror game once in a while, it's refreshing, satisfying and memorable :D especially when you play with your friends and when one gets scared, the rest do as well even if there's no reason. Those game do a really good job in getting us involved.

SOMA! IMHO, best narrative and ambience (that ending!)... but probably a game that relies more on anguish, anxiety and distress than horror (horror is more in the story than in the gameplay).

Alien Isolation and Outlast are two awesome Linux horror games.
I only felt fear with the classic Alien vs Predator (playing with Marine), and with F.E.A.R. But with Alien Isolation I feel more nervous and oppression that fear. I can't play more than a hour at day because I get very worried.
With Outcast is not very different. It's a very bloody-gore game, and the anxiety in darkness, the camera batteries...
