So you like to be afraid? You like to soil your pants? Well then, here's a few must-have titles to try on Linux & SteamOS.
These are my personal picks and favourites. There's quite a number more, but these are the ones Iliked hated playing the most (Yes, I am a big wuss).
Among the Sleep
I finished the game in two sittings and wow. It is one of the games that has impressed me the most in recent years. Playing as a toddler really does make the gameplay and feeling of it different. You can see more thoughts from me on it here.
If you have been on the fence about this one, I wholeheartedly recommend to bite the bullet and pick it up.
Monstrum
Another Horror game done a bit differently. There is no set path, you don't know which particular monster is chasing you and you don't entirely know what you're doing.
You're on a ship drifting in the ocean and you need to find your way off it somehow.
Alien: Isolation
I love the Alien universe, have done for a long time. I highly recommend watching the Alien films before you play this one as it will really enhance the experience for you. You cannot miss this game. Being honest, I still haven't got it 100% because it terrifies me so much. I get cold sweats at the thought of playing this game.
Outlast
If you think you're tough mentally, this is definitely the one for you. I can't play more than a few minutes of this one as the atmosphere is so intense I can literally feel my heart trying to jump out of my chest. It's horrible, I hate hate hate it, but youmight be probably are a lot braver than me.
What are your favourites? Tell us your stories of brilliance in the face of death, or your failure as you check your pants are okay.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
i don't know why but i didnt find Alien Isolation scary at all.
SOMA on the other hand was scarier for me, even though its not too much horror there, but the atmosphere is so great.
Monstrum is also nice.
Outlast i didn't play too much, didn't get hooked.
Among the Sleep i dont own yet, will check it out when it goes to sale.

Monstrum is on my stack, As well as soma which is not listed here.
Outlast, i played a few hours, but i was bored except when i was jumb-scared, not the kind of horror i like.

Something about SOMA didn't hook me. Can remember walking through water at one point a little bored. Shame, love the setting and the visuals, but I do need to give it another go.

Knock-knock is a 2D game with a cartoony style but it does wonders with atmosphere and I found it absolutely horrifying, especially at first. It also plays around with some interesting themes and approaches. One of the best horror games I've played/seen.
White Night is something I've only seen the beginning of and in a video played by others too, but that certainly was enough to make me realize it belongs in this conversation alright. I'm yet to find the courage to check it out properly.
The Cat Lady is almost becoming somewhat of a modern classic among those who are familiar with it. It's disturbing, scary and interesting.
Also I feel that Oxenfree deserves an honorable mention, because while not a horror game, it does pleasant spooky supernatural atmosphere better than many straight-up horror games.

I love Alien: Isolation :D
I didn't find it really scary but incredibly tense in a lot of section. The atmosphere is so immersive with a really nice balance between calm moments when you just walk and enjoy the look and sound design and moments were you really feel like a prey trying to escape.
I completed it in Hard mode and I really recommand it. Plus the Linux port runs really well for me, didn't see a real performance drop compared to windows (yes I got this game before I switched to Linux, so it's a windows sale, shame on me :P)

Quoting: Xpanderi don't know why but i didnt find Alien Isolation scary at all.

I think it has to do with the AI of the Alien, it does some funny things, and its also easy to outsmart him.
But I didnt play it for the scares, for me it was just a nostalgic trip in to the Alien franchis ^^.
And its where the game shines I guess.
Soma I also agree on, its just pure disturbing sometimes, and the story and ending is epic.
I dont want to spoil anything but its very dark and sad, like the whole game xD.
Monstrum and Outlast, well Im to mutch of a chicken to even try those.
Watch a stream, yes, but I dont think I would jump in to it, maybe.
And Outlast 2 looks even more horrific :S

I never been a real fan of Alien Movies tbh :) they are not bad but im not a fan of them.
That might be one of the reasons i didnt get hooked into the game, because the story for me was kind a meh and the game wasnt too scary... ofc there were places where it got your hearth pumping a bit..but still.

SOMA, Amnesia:TDD, and, old but good, Penumbra. Metro has some nice horror elements as well.
