I still think it's crazy how popular the game is with how many millions it has sold.

We used to run a server for it a few years ago, had some pretty good times on it, but the game lost its charm after a while for me. My Son loves it though, I imagine to a younger audience it must be incredible.

What I think is more crazy, is that they still don't have a mod API sorted properly for it.

See the release announcement here.

Are you still playing it, or have you moved to an open source alternative? Let us know in the comments! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I bought in when they released their first alpha; I was 14 and in 9th grade at that time, and now I'm 21. Needless to say it blew up with my friends and my other classmates shortly after... I ended up playing that game so much I now can barely look at the game without sighing.

Great memories though... Sad Microsoft has taken over, I feel bad for the devs that had to go through that change.

Is it weird that I had far more fun with setting up a server and getting the plethora of mods working together than I did playing the game? But it got to a point where every time there was an official release, they ended up adding in only some bits of some of the great mods I used, which of course broke the whole mod. It became a horrible battle so I just gave up and moved onto other games.

I tried Minecraft in my Vive, and while it has high potential to be a lot better and creepier, it is still Minecraft which I have not really enjoyed since before they added alchemy.

I can't play Minecraft anymore because the character movement feels weird after playing to much Minetest ^^

I sure Liam still remembers my little city with castle on the old GoL Minecraft server, well I have already rebuild that on a Minetest server :P

Quoting: PlintslchoThere're people way older than you are that still greatly enjoy Minecraft, believe me. ;-)

Ironically, the only people who are adamant that Minecraft is for kids are those who were recently children/young teens. That said, I am pleased to see Minecraft still works well on Linux even though it is owned by Microsoft. I can only wonder how much longer this version equality will last and so I've been cozying up real close to Minetest lately.

I think that the version equality will be there for a long time since it's the same version due to Minecraft being a Java application. Of course they could always try and force the XBOX version as the only version (guessing here that that version is not written in Java) but there is nothing that indicates that this is on the road map.

I'm fairly sure I heard somewhere they had re-written minecraft in a compiled language for the win10 store (and that it performed better than the java version)

I play Voxelands on and off, played a lot of Minecraft a few years back. I think the libre alternatives are on par with it by now though.

How is Minetest progressing? That looks epic! Last time I tried out Minetest, it was very basic, but so much faster than Minecraft (C vs Java if I recall). I may have to try it out again. Maybe we can get a GoL server for it?

I'm going to wait it out until SteamVR stuff works in Linux and then hope that someone modifies Minecraft for the vive there, or maybe someone will adapt Minetest to OpenVR. :D

Minetest just recently reached 0.4.14 which is still missing critical features such as mobs and hunger. And they still have yet to reach some major milestones for rewritten networking and such. But so long as you throw in a couple of mods, Minetest is very much enjoyable.

When Microsoft begins to infect something, it's never just a flip of the switch and BAM it's gone. In reality, support for non-Windows versions will gradually decay. Releases might start arriving later for Mac and Linux. Or a feature gets added which mysteriously only performs well under Windows/Xbox.

Just look at what happened to Skype. Sure, it is still technically usable on Linux but the experience is already in an advanced stage of decay.

The mobile version written in C++ is being ported to Windows 10. There no plan for Linux.

"yay, gold mines and polar bears!" (my daughter, 6years)

so this means work for me, updating server and leading an expedition to these mines I guess.. :) I still play this, with my 3 kids... we have our own server, I set it up for them so we could have our freedom and peace to build what we like...
