I shot off a message to Nightdive Studios about their Linux plans for System Shock since Linux is a stretch goal. The reply doesn't fill me with confidence to pledge right now.
My question: "About the Linux stretch goal, is that for a Linux version after the initial Windows release or for a same-day Linux release?"
The answer:
Nightdive StudiosHey Liam,
We can't make promises beyond our current plan to release a version for PC and Xbox One at this time. It would be my hope that a Linux version is released the same day, but I can't confirm that will be the case come launch day.
Thanks for your support!
For any developer reading, PC does not mean Windows and yes, I will keep hammering on about this.
It's pretty much guaranteed to hit the Linux stretch goal due to how amazingly well it's being funded, but that reply doesn't say "fund me Linux gamer". The major problem I have with this approach, is we have seen numerous times when a Linux version is delayed because of some unforeseen problems that could have been sorted early-on. I really hope Nightdive don't make that same mistake.
It's currently on $520,190 pledged of $900,000 goal, with the Linux version being locked at $1.1 million.
That's not to say I will pass on it when it does arrive, quite the opposite, it looks and sounds fantastic. I just want to be sure my money is well spent, as I'm sure you do too.

In a related story, I'm not sure when I'll buy the remake of System Shock.

So they are not making plans for their FIRST strech goal but I'm sure that they have plans to release other stretch goals day one, I cannot believe that they will delay localization or extended narrative after Linux version is released.
They should reorder the strecth goals and stop using Linux as a bait.

Well this attitude is certainly not what I was hoping for from Nightdive. I guess it is good they are being open and honest now instead of later.

Will have that in mind when the game is released.

I'll buy the Linux version when it appears on this website as released for Steam and reviews confirm it's not a flop with 80% + Meta score.

It's been what? Two days since they started their kickstarter, and they're already over half way to their initial goal. This will definitely hit a few stretch goals by time it's over.

It's a chicken and egg problem. There's no demo available for the Linux version and the stretch goal is at 1.1 million.
How do you expect Linux users, in all good faith, to back this?
They might end up with a version of the game they've never had the pleasure of trying beforehand that only runs on a platform they don't use.
It's silly and pointless. Make the demo available for us to test so that we can work towards your stretch goal at the very least.
Of course, Linux and OSX shouldn't even be stretch goals. Although OSX really needs more modern drivers.
Oh and asking for 1.1m without a guarantee of a day 1 release is a tad too much imo.

I had my hand hovering over the pledge button for this yesterday, mostly because of the strength of the team they have on this, but it was the fact that we might never see a version that stopped me. When it comes out, I'm pretty sure that It'll be damn good though.
