PAYDAY 2 and the franchise as a whole is now owned by the developers Starbreeze/OVERKILL and they are celebrating by removing the need to buy drills to open a safe.

From the update post:

They will carrying on supporting the game for another 18 months, so plenty of time for them to drag out more DLC content eh!

A pretty good decision, as the microtransactions angered a lot of people.

It also seems like PAYDAY 3 is going to happen, as it was directly mentioned on the official Starbreeze website:

Nice. I dunno, maybe I'm too harsch with the unlock system, since I didn't tried it (yet, maybe). But in other games with such a system, I really hated it.
