New version of the itch store app is out, better Arch Linux compatibility and other fixes

I want to like Itch in everything they do. Certainly a model for Steam and others to follow. But a quick glance at their catalog reveals it dominated by dating sims and romantic visual novels. Or am I just crazy?

There is a lot of cruft on it due to the low barrier of entry, their sorting options generally help you find the good stuff though.

If your looking at it from the perspective of ' have wallet, will buy games ' perspective then yes that's true. The platform does sell content but its more focused around new ideas from total newcomers, the indie scene and collaborative working for game jams ( the web client reflects this much more ). So Steam, GOG might be better suited for your needs until it attracts more main stay developers.

One persons cruft is another persons crystal gem. As above a lot of stuff is WIP or just experimental, that is the idea of the platform its not designed to be a Steam replacement ( yet ). That said, there is some actual cruft too ^_^

it works nice as an alternative to steam, GOG and having proper desktop support vs valves garbage client is welcome.

Isn't it ironic that this seems to be both a pro and con to Linux? I spend so much time browsing github, AUR and other package repositories just to figure out what exists that I can use on Arch Linux.

I dunno if I have any more hours in my day to now sift through Itch.io catalog, unless anyone has a pro tip on how to quickly sift through to their good games?

These all work, but for Blue Revolver you'll want to download the experimental one since the Itch client doesn't deal with .love files correctly.

Also, I see nothing bad with romantic visual novels. :)

Now I know what is still missing on my machine, the Itch.io client, thanks for the reminder ;)

I am a huge Steam fan and I do love having my games there BUT I do want to see this store succeed even tho I am probably not going to use it.

A cool feature I'd like to see is an integrated Steam Controller configurator. SC is IMO the best controller out there, but it's not (much or at all) better than an XBox Controller without it's configurability.

It'd be cool if this would offer alternatives to all of Steam's features and even bring some new ideas to the table.

Question: Does it include all open-source / free games in it's catalogue? If yes then I am going to use it. I like having my games installed through a game manager rather than standalone - that's why I'm really looking forward to seeing GOG Galaxy on Linux and to see it succeed as well and offer alternatives to Steam's features.

When I'm going to build my gaming-only PC I want it to be more like a universal gaming station - with options for PS2 emulation, and non-Steam games.
