Garry Newman of Facepunch shared on twitter that Rust has now hit over 4 million sales, and Linux is sitting at over 30 thousand.

That's obviously far short of what it has sold on Windows, still not close to Mac levels, but that's still quite a bit of money from Linux sales.

While I'm not a fan of Rust myself, it just doesn't click with me, I can't deny it has appeal to people who like those sorts of games. Even though Garry doesn't feel Linux has been worth it in his previous statements, I am still very glad it's on Linux. It's also nice of Garry to be so open about the sales.

I haven't played Rust for a long time, how's the Linux version looking now folks? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

thanks to the linux version he has sold 34291 more copies of his game. Its probably a lot more than the cost of the linux support on this month, but is still not even a 1 percent on this game

So 19.99 * 34,291 = 685,477.09

So In other words Rust has sold an extra 700 thousand dollars (assuming his numbers are honest.)

Also also being based on a Game Engine - Unity3D which Supports Deploying to Linux.

I know like 10 people who use Linux and guess what? 0 of them play Rust - they all play Ark.

The reviews have been mediocre and kept me of any of my Linux Gaming Clan from buying, and also - the anti-linux remarks from the creator have turned me off to ever buying anything from him.

*snap*

Maybe Gary should quit Gaming Development and become and Accountant instead :P

I had thought about buying it at some point in the future until he made a lot of anti-Linux statements. I'm sure there are a lot of other Linux users of a similar mindset.

@Mblackwell - I can't Imagine what you're reffering to, oh wait... nevermind.

@adevland Of course. If i could do it again I'd have never supported linux.

How to piss off an entire community into boycotting you thereby loosing you and your company sales, press attention, internet back links, fans, and gamers and respect.

Perhaps Garry Newman should apologize for being a asshat and win back some our respect, otherwise it's straight to the toilet for his stuff IMO.

Its to hardcore pvp for me. There are some promesing speculations and concept arts Iv seen that could hint for more pve content in rust. And if this proves to be right, I might get rust.

I dont understand tho, why hes not thinking it was worth linux.
So 19.99 * 34,291 = 685,477.09
To me thats alot of money.

Is there any doubt that Gaming is the new gold rush ? Make something decent and never have to work in a traditional job for the rest of your life ( okay, easier said than done ) make something half decent get it on steam and its still a good few years away from the grind.

It is. We are in a new renascence where godly tools are now in the hands of mere mortals and we're seeing the birth of many new kinds of games which are going toe to toe with the traditional game development model.

Take for example Stardew Valley, they've sold 1,442,067 copies at 14.99 pulling in 21.6 Million Dollars for a single developer probably developing the thing in mums house.

Gaming is a gold mine for people with a little bit of OCD, Passion, Hypo-Mania and technical ability meshed with innovative skills.

Mere pennies to us mortals, $700,000? pffft - pennies - it could only buy a weekend on the yacht with coke and strippers.

I was super tempted during the last sale, but Unity + hostile dev, I didn't see any hope for improvements (and thought they would drop development after a while). Maybe I was wrong... I just wish they would be more public with a commitment to support.

I'm surprised it sold so well. The last 4 times I tried to play it, it was unplayable and buggy. 7 Days to Die is currently scratching my survival horror itch. It runs well for me at least.

Interesting than this numbers be disclosed so openly, this represents 0.82% of linux players, a close number of steam hardware survey.
slaapliedje 21 Jul 2016
I think I only own this because of humble bundle. Haven't ever played it though 'cause I keep hearing it's a buggy mess, and after his comment, I figured why bother, he'd probably pull support.
sarmad 10 years 21 Jul 2016
Why would he say it wasn't worth it? At 20$ the Linux sales amount to more 600k$. I doubt porting a game built with Unity3d would cost more than 100k$ at most, which means half a million dollars extra profit.
Eric1212 21 Jul 2016
I have this game since a loooonnnnngggg time... I'm not even sure i'm counted as a linux or a windows...
GustyGhost 21 Jul 2016
Before we proclaim that Linux users earned Facepunch an extra 700K, let's remember that a huge proportion of those sales were probably at a discount. I would be willing to bet the true figure is several hundred thousand dollars lower. And that's not a Linux problem, PC gaming in general is huge on price cuts and seasonal sales.

Quite right. And I would also add that Linux sales can quite easily be counted as Windows sales by Valve if for example you've bought the game on your Android phone or on another computer and you haven't played it in the two weeks after purchase.
ElectricPrism 21 Jul 2016
@Nyamiou - this guy gets it. Some sales may have been discounted and many others may have not been counted at all due to wrongly being assigned to windows.

I think I bought 30 games this month all from my phone for my Steam Machine.

Yep. I took it off of my second-class wishlist the instant it was clear what he really thought of us. I am actually surprised the sales are as high as they are, considering that they were only at 8K at the time he started talking shit about us.

I'll make sure not to get this. Anyone who talks shit about their target audiences no matter how small does not deserve any money from anyone.
