Heart&Slash is a very cool looking action and adventure game, but sadly I can't even tell you if it's any good as it crashes instantly.

I went to load it up today thinking: this is exactly what I need to play when I'm feeling ill and give it a write up, but nope.

The developers are aware of it (see here), but they claim they cannot reproduce it.

For such a major crash to happen for all Linux users, it's obvious enough testing just wasn't done on Linux before release. We see this happen all too often, bugs that should have been caught but somehow got through testing.

Another one to sadly stay away from for now, if they do ever manage to fix it I would love to take a look at it. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

For me all Unity games run without issues (I don't have this particular game though). And that is the reason why they will only commit to support for Steam OS (or Ubuntu, or whatever). Otherwise they would have to check everything for whatever compatibility issues arise.

Of course, in this case they weren't actually specific about what they wanted to support.

Give them the benefit of the doubt. It could be a bug that exists only on newer version of the graphic drivers and they only test it on old ones, or maybe they have a custom workaround that is not distribution agnostic and they didn't realize it yet.

Well, it’s Unity 3D… All the games that use the Unity engine from nov. 2015 or more recent crash here (or at best have no sound) unless I disable the Steam runtime. IIRC it’s related to Valve providing libpulse when they shouldn’t. But most non-Unity 3D games work fine with the Steam runtime. So it shows they don’t care much (both Valve and Unity) if games work or not on Linux.

That reminds me of Steam on BSD where they had no sound, maybe no correlation but my followup impulsive question is are you using BSD?

Hi Liam

Unity ... instant crash
Do you have pulseaudio installed?

Some games require pulseaudio to properly launch, as Hard West, Conflicks - Revolutionary Space Battles, Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star... or they instantly crash, and some will launch but without sound, as The Bug Butcher. There are probably many more I don't know about.

@stan

Take a look here:
Several Unity games segfault at "FMOD failed to get number of drivers" when pulseaudio isn't running

There is a fix at post #16 and cross-referenced in inXile forums: [Re: [Linux] Game Crashes and Missing Text](https://forums.inxile-entertainment.com/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=14060&p=171785#p171785).

There is another fix at post #22: create a fake libpulse-simple.so.0 in the game directory, then change LD_LIBRARY_PATH to launch the game.

Yes, I do of course have that installed. I am an Ubuntu user with all the usual stuff.

It's not the pulseaudio thing - it's an opengl crash which existed for literally two weeks. :|
