Well this is confusing and aggravating, it seems the Linux version of Project Cars is officially never going to happen.

@gamingonlinux There are no plans for a Linux version right now.

— Project CARS (@projectcarsgame) August 7, 2016

I pointed out a link on their own website that is still up here:

QuoteFurthermore, Project CARS will also be coming to Valve’s Steam OS, extending an existing partnership with Steam that has already allowed tens of thousands of WMD members the ability to download and play builds of the game during its development and allow specific multiplayer and social features that are only possible using this unique platform.

No reply on that yet, but I will update this if we get anything back as it was only recently sent to them.

Sadly, it's another game to join the growing list of games that promised a Linux/SteamOS version to drop support at some point without telling anyone. I've tried to get in touch with the developer numerous times. It's pleasing to get closure, but it took a long time to get it out of them.

They did at least stop taking any funding way before announcing SteamOS support, so if you purchased it once it released when there was still no sign of their previously promised support, well, you probably know by now not to pre-order.

It's sad to see another promise being broken. But as Yasser already mentioned, we still have Codemasters backing us up with some decent racing games.

Did anyone seriously think that Project Cars would ever see the light of day on SteamOS? The announcement was more than vague. There are a far more "outspoken" candidates out there which still have to deliver - Rocket League comes to my mind. And to spare you some future disappointment: If Star Citizen ever will be finished, we still won't see a Linux version. As with Kingdom Come: Deliverance (which reminds me, that I should finally get my refund from those bastards).

Quoting: gojulBought this one, trusting their lies. I should not have done so. Now they can wait for a loooooooooooooooooong loooooooooooooooooooong time for my money...

Don't blame them for your - sorry for sounding so harsh - stupidity. It was pretty clear from the get go (or at least soon afterwards), that they would release the Linux version very very late, if at all (particularly when they dropped the Wii U version in July 2015). The irony: Your purchase will count as Windows sale. And they couldn't care less about the "we won't support you in the future" because the worst that happens, is that people refrain from pre-ordering. If they'd churn out PC2 for Linux in a reasonable state: How many would not buy "because they never released PC1 for my favourite platform"?
Lesson learned: Never pre-order. Or rather: Never order on wishful thinking.

Now we know how all those Wii users felt. Still, given that they'd already broken the Wii promise, it's not a big surprise to hear them breaking more, is it? They've set their tent out as an untrustworthy developer. Simply avoid in future and hopefully not too many of you got burned by this minor fraud.

Actually, scratch that - I doubt it was fraud as surely there was no actual criminal intent. More likely it was plain incompetence.

Still very frustrating through.

Well I wish I never bought this damn game now, really pissed off.. Getting our hopes up and then changing their mind later is just downright annoying but I guess there's good reason. PCars was a big deal breaker for me ;(

What a surprise ;-)

QuoteThe irony: Your purchase will count as Windows sale.

Well: If the purchase was done on Linux and not played in the first week, it still is a Linux sale. However, it also depends on how the publisher interprets statistics, and for a game not available on Linux... he might just add up the numbers and treat everything as Windows.

I'm familiar with that. Since there is only a Windows version it will be counted as Windows sale, regardless of being installed or played. It escapes me, why people buy games "because something was promised" - buy it when it is real. Perhaps even worse than pre-ordering (one can assume that a game will be released at a given date - see XCOM 2).

I was caught at that time. Not done it anymore since then.

I guess no one should be surprised, but it still stings. Man, just one year ago we had an enormous list of AAAs awaiting.

Today... There's hardly any. Is this just a temporary bump or an indication that the balloon is deflating?
I hope it's not the latter...

Sad. I'm not a huge racing fan and would certainly prefer Dirt Rally, but Project Cars did look pretty promising.

I don't understand Valve's indifference in all these broken promises and massive delays...

I don't want to be thoroughly pessimistic, but as I see it, SteamOS was Valve vanity project and it more or less flopped. So Valve cares less and less about linux/steamos it seems.

Quoting: GuestSod them, I'll just pirate it and play it on my Windows partition.

While I would never advocate breaking the law, neither would I denounce Linuxians who pirate the games of liars, cheats, and soulless Microsoft assbunnies.

This is why you should never never never donate to Kickstarter or buy Early Access on the promise of a Linux version, and you should never never never buy any game unless a Linux version is actually available for download immediately following the purchase!

Seriously, guys, it's way too easy for us to get burned.
omer666 Aug 8, 2016
The worst thing about this piece of news, is that I immediately forgot what it was all about as soon as I had finished reading it. I suspect it's about some game or something...

As far as I know, Valve is still actively supporting Steam for Linux and SteamOS, so why the doom and gloom? This was always a long-term project for them.

I'm honestly asking: Anythng they've (visibly) done, say, this year?
Besides doing basic maintenance on Steam for Linux?

I have the impression that the future of games for Linux is very dependent on Valve, had interesting
advances in the last two years, but the situation is far from good, and let's be honest, there are a much larger base of Windows than Linux users, we need more people playing on Linux to attract the attention of developers, but we need more games to attract new players to Linux, and so we were in a difficult cycle to break.
This year it seems that the number of people using Linux had a small increase, but see if this trend continues and helps us to more advances.
