CD PROJEKT RED replied to me about The Witcher 3 and Linux, flat-out denying to answer any questions
With all the hoo-ha about The Witcher 3 and the replies GOG have given (first being it was never planned, second being they don't know), I finally have an answer from the actual developer of The Witcher 3.
Yeah, I know, I'm writing about this again after saying I probably wouldn't, "please make it stop" and all that.
This is the first time CDPR have ever actually communicated with me directly.
I replied right after this, and immediately got an out of the office auto-reply. Hmmm.
There you go, an official comment from the developer of The Witcher 3. It clears up nothing, it's a flat-out denial to answer my basic and easy to understand questions.
It does raise the question though: why reply at all when you're essentially saying nothing?
I don't think we will ever truly know what happened, I expect no one to talk about it as I imagine both Valve and CDPR want this snafu buried.
I will just leave this here again for posterity, to remind myself and you to never pre-order based on developer promises, not even a big banner on Steam itself:

This is too big of a game and Linux based sales will be really low, because, well because they are too late. Such overhyped projects are wanted by people and those who wanted found a way to play them already.
That doesn't make sense. How did they find a way to play it? It's not working in Wine yet. Those who only use Linux for gaming skipped it, and can still be potential customers.

Here's my wishful thinking version:
Cyberpunk development is ramping up. Cyberpunk will port the Witcher3 engine to Vulkan. At some point when that implementation is stable, a breakoff team will investigate porting Witcher3 to SteamOS/Linux with Vulkan support only.

W3 is a graphically intensive game, and maybe VP failed to get their wrapper in a state to handle it.

I see. Yes, it's possible that attempted wrappers came out to be unsatisfactory, and that is what's currently blocking their Linux release. It's too late for them to make any native engine rewrite, and until wrappers will perform well, there is no point to release it. At this point, I think Wine has better chances of actually delivering playable TW3 on Linux. Even if it won't perform well right away, they'll gradually work on improving it.

If you ask me, GOTY is released so I don't think that we will see anything new for TW3.

Thanks to some helpful folks, I got a GOG key to test it in Wine. It's unplayable now. If you overcome the 32GB virtual heap limit bug, the most you can get to is the initial menu:
