With all the hoo-ha about The Witcher 3 and the replies GOG have given (first being it was never planned, second being they don't know), I finally have an answer from the actual developer of The Witcher 3.

Yeah, I know, I'm writing about this again after saying I probably wouldn't, "please make it stop" and all that.

This is the first time CDPR have ever actually communicated with me directly.

I replied right after this, and immediately got an out of the office auto-reply. Hmmm.

There you go, an official comment from the developer of The Witcher 3. It clears up nothing, it's a flat-out denial to answer my basic and easy to understand questions.

It does raise the question though: why reply at all when you're essentially saying nothing?

I don't think we will ever truly know what happened, I expect no one to talk about it as I imagine both Valve and CDPR want this snafu buried.

I will just leave this here again for posterity, to remind myself and you to never pre-order based on developer promises, not even a big banner on Steam itself:

Well there is not much use for them to port the game now and they should have just rejected the possibility.
This is too big of a game and Linux based sales will be really low, because, well because they are too late. Such overhyped projects are wanted by people and those who wanted found a way to play them already.

That doesn't make sense. How did they find a way to play it? It's not working in Wine yet. Those who only use Linux for gaming skipped it, and can still be potential customers.

It's easy.

They're working on it but are having difficulties. This would be their first Linux game. Witcher 2 was outsourced to VP.

Except they said this:

Our team is focused mainly on Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent and cannot revisit W3 for Linux. We are still exploring our options for Linux – if we would have something new to announce we will do it via our social channels.

So I highly doubt anything is going on in-house now. Outsourcing - can still happen I guess.

Here's my wishful thinking version:

Cyberpunk development is ramping up. Cyberpunk will port the Witcher3 engine to Vulkan. At some point when that implementation is stable, a breakoff team will investigate porting Witcher3 to SteamOS/Linux with Vulkan support only.

W3 is a graphically intensive game, and maybe VP failed to get their wrapper in a state to handle it.

And Shmerl, I'm pretty sure TheGZeus means it in the technical sense, not in the monetary sense. As in "they weren't up to the task".

I see. Yes, it's possible that attempted wrappers came out to be unsatisfactory, and that is what's currently blocking their Linux release. It's too late for them to make any native engine rewrite, and until wrappers will perform well, there is no point to release it. At this point, I think Wine has better chances of actually delivering playable TW3 on Linux. Even if it won't perform well right away, they'll gradually work on improving it.

If you ask me, GOTY is released so I don't think that we will see anything new for TW3.

At this point, I think Wine has better chances of actually delivering playable TW3 on Linux. Even if it won't perform well right away, they'll gradually work on improving it.
I saw you in the W3 wine bug thread some time ago, what is the state currently?

Thanks to some helpful folks, I got a GOG key to test it in Wine. It's unplayable now. If you overcome the 32GB virtual heap limit bug, the most you can get to is the initial menu:

I don't understand why this is so difficult to decipher. Basically they're saying.. Maybe well get around to it and maybe not. They don't want to say yes in case they don't and don't want to say no... Just in case they will. By not saying anything they don't commit themselves to anything and leave their options open. This seems to be the way they're operating with everything... Not saying when games will be released... What they will be about.. what the specs will be..etc. Think they learned their lesson early on.

I'm not sure what is considered correct there (since I have nothing to compare to), but it is animated, yes. You can see sparks flying from the fire, branches moved by the wind and etc. There are no intro videos however or anything like that when you open the game, and some suggested they should be before the main menu screen.

but somehow I feel the chances of that are extremely slim since we've heard them say before that they have no plans to support linux in witcher 3)

They said exactly the opposite actually (that they planned to make it for Linux), but they never managed to fulfill those plans so far.

Considering this and all versions of the game for PS4 (digital, physical, GOTY etc) have incompatible save data to each other, I get the distinct impression that they are very hasty when planning out technical issues.

I feel cheated because GOTY is cheaper than both DLCs on their own, and all my progress is moot.
Sold the game. Might eventually grab it again.

I wonder if we keep bothering them with support tickets and questions about witcher 3.
They might give us something, it has been confirmed for linux, even gog and cdpr have said this them self and the proof is out there on threads and posts on GoG,GoL and Steam. I could understand a delay or why they cant work on witcher 3 atm cause they need to focus on another game, but they will take care of witcher 3 later.
But now they just try to pretend they never planned it for linux :/.
