The Saints Row: The Third [Steam] port from Virtual Programming looks like it could use some love, it seems the co-op play on Linux has been broken since release.

It’s fantastic to see such games being ported, but it’s a massive shame when such big features just don’t work.

I decided to check up on it myself and sure enough, it’s completely broken. No matter what you try, it seems it will not work.

I checked up on it, and there had been a bug report open without reply from VP since April 2016. That was until yesterday when there was a bit of back of forth between myself and my VP contacts, and they have now given this answer:
QuoteHi. Apologies that there has been no reply to this thread.
We are currently extremely busy with project deadlines, however this issue has been noted and will be addressed in a subsequent release. Thank you.

They have since changed the github for it from being a place to report bugs, to a place for "open discussion and problem solving". And request people to report issues to them directly. It seems they have now done this for all their github trackers, so they are no longer for public bug reports. This is more in line with what other developers do (private bug reports).

If you’re after a bit of fun in co-op on Linux, right now this game will not be it. I really do hope they go back to their previous ports and polish them up some more, they all seems to have an array of different issues left open for months on end with no solutions. Ah! Good to know, as I have issues with Overlord, which I reported on the corresponding github issue tracker.
A pity they don't use github anymore, as it's a great place for such things.

But another interesting thing...

Hopefully more high quality Linux ports? :)

Quoting: MarkyLiam, could you elaborate on what's broken with the co-op? I've been playing Saint's Row 3 co-op with a friend who uses windows. Aside from some random crashes and our radio's not being synchronised, it's been pretty flawless for me on Ubuntu.
I imagine you're connecting to them right? If so, it's likely Linux to Linux is what's broken. You're the only person I've ever seen say it works.

Yeah, he's been hosting. It must be Linux to Linux and maybe also Linux hosting, then.

Even in a Windows-to-Windows connection, Saints Row IV (and probably 3, by extension) netcode sucks donkey balls. I can't say I'm surprised in the least.

Shameless self plug here, but I spent hours trying to get Linux SR3 to co-op with Windows SR3 (and co-op in general without crashing straight up) and I wrote the fix up here; http://doitonlinux.blogspot.com/2017/01/saints-row-3-crashing-in-multiplayer.html

@DoltOnLinux: Thank you very much. This helped me too. When I tried to play with a mate (both on Linux), it was always kicking me back to desktop. I already had the ingame voice chat set to disable, but my mate had it to always transmit. After he changed that, it was working over two hours without issues.

So, if you want to troll your buddy, just set your ingame voice to always transmit, and he will be kicked from the game right to the desktop. Don't expect your mate to play with you again though :D

The Cause of crashing is down to USB Microphones it seems. As when I connect to a user with one or a user plugs one in, it will crash. Without the USB Microphone.. had hours of co-op on SR3 so far.

Yep, this seems to have solved the irregular crashing me and a buddy had. The ingame voice was set to push button, so we probably brushed the button at times.
