OpenMW 0.40 is the latest release of the open source game engine for playing Morrowind. It's crazy how far along it is now, close to feature complete by the looks of it.

I have fond memories of Morrowind, as it was one of the first proper 3D RPG games I think I ever actually played. This was back on the original Xbox too when I was rather a lot younger.

They need more coders, if interested check out the code on github.

This release only implements a few new features:
- Implemented NPC “Face” function
- Implemented weather dependent sun/moon reflections
- Implemented effect removal for abilities, fixes locked player movement upon exiting portable house mods
- Implemented deletion of moved references

It does also have a ton of bug fixes, which is obviously important for being able to play through the game properly and in full.

It does have a few issues left to address:
- Shadows are not re-implemented at this time, as well as distant land
- To use the Linux targz package binaries Qt4 and libpng12 must be installed on your system

Once Shadows and Distant Land are addressed, I personally plan to dive in and give it a proper go.

Soon. Soon I will be able to play the second best piece of software (and the best full game) Bethesda has ever made. I'm going to wait for shadows and distant lands, though. I've waited this long, might as well wait a bit longer.

I hope there will be an OpenOB fork one day... for me Oblivion was the first proper RPG I ever played, first proper one of all, not just 3D. Before that the only RPGs I played were Runescape (it was pretty cool but I don't consider it "proper") and MU Online (which was just grind grind grind without any story or anything and the only reason I played it was because my friends did - played it on private servers)... back then I was into strategy games (still am) and racing games (not so much anymore), then Oblivion opened my eyes... needless to say I spent countless hours and finished every quest in the game and all the mods worth playing and most of the "meh" ones as well. Then after a few years I found Fallout 3 and NV which only added to my hype, but that's another story. I also spent countless hours on the wikis of these games learning about their lore.

I would have tried MW but the thing that put me off was the animations, which by today's standards are retarded (but it's understandable considering how old the game is). Also the unvoiced dialogues put me off alot. It's amazing that some of them were voiced, that was a rarity back then. My opinion is that this game was a gem when it was "young" but time was pretty hard on it. Those two and some more reasons are just preventing me from immersing into the game like I want, and I really tried.
I hope OpenMW will eventually bring new animations and graphics, and that it would use the new voices that the Skywind community made for their projects, which as far as the preview footage shows, are really close to professional voice acting.
I really think that will eventually happen, given enough time, and when it will I'll play it. There's been much activity on this project as of late, and that's a really good sign, isn't it?

BioWare has answered the same questions for NWN/IE-Games without specific multiplayer content. Co-op feels a bit weird sometimes but it works great and was fun.

Seriously? All the voiced dialogues in modern games puts me off, because it feels much better to skip the same text, when you have read it 30x, but it is very annoying to skip the same voice line when you have heard it 30x (it would be better if the line wasn't there after that).

Full voice acting is bane of modern RPGs.

I think the easiest way to implement a multiplayer element into a single player experience would be the way that the Fable games (at least Fable 2) handled it. In it, the other player(s) are just "henchmen" that are there just to help the "main" player and explore the world with them, rather than complete the quests for themselves. I could see this model working well with TES games: you would just invite a friend to play - with their character about the same level as you - and then you could go on playing as normal, with the exception that you have a friend there to help you.

Yus, that can work. Would work best with content like the Siege at Firemoth expansion.

The 38 years old me thanks alot the OpenMW devs for making me feels like 22 years old me! Replaying Morrowind (with some better textures mod, quite beautiful) with an open source engine is something I couldn't even dream of back in the days. I plan to finish it again - but in less gameplay hours than back in the days (sunk 700 hours in it during 2001-2002). Welcome back, lid the Khajiit Assassin!

Now, let's grind him to level 36 (level 5 right now, didn't had that much time to play this week-end, can't wait to be sneaky enough so every guard in Balmora is naked :]). More seriously, replaying the Thieve's Guild quests is still really, really fun :)

I tried to play Gothic, but it was like trying to use a mid-80s Russian Emacs clone or something. The game looks interesting, but the controls are bizarre and using them with a Colemak keyboard was untenable.
