It releases on September 8th, but remember, it will be a Beta.
QuoteYes, it’s really happening! After several delays (and our sincerest apologies about that, btw), the SteamOS and Mac versions of the game will finally be available for download. An important thing to note, however, is that both versions are still considered “beta,” with a handful of known issues that we’ve detailed below. It should also be said that while other Linux platforms may work, the SteamOS version of the game is the only Linux client that we’re “officially” supporting during the beta period. Likewise, the Mac version may or may not work on older systems with an integrated video solution, but a dedicated GPU is highly recommended (Macs from 2013 and after should be okay).
Emphasis mine
They also state a few known issues:
- The correct store page for DLC purchased through the Showroom doesn’t show up for Big Picture users. This is a Steam client-specific issue that Valve will be fixing in an upcoming patch
- There are occasional crashes when exiting from a match to the main menu
- The statues in Urban Central do not display correctly
- You may experience intermittent blurring issues
See their big update on it here.
It's bloody great that they have nailed down an actual release for it, but having support only for SteamOS during the beta is a bit annoying (especially since I don't even use SteamOS any more). A beta is a perfect time to nail down support for normal desktop Linux, isn't it? I hope they don't continue that support status after the beta period.
Also, this update will introduce their micro-transaction crate/key model. Much like what Team Fortress 2 has:
QuoteKeys will be available for $1.49 individually, or in bundles of 5 for $5, 10 for $10, or 20 for $20.
Essentially, you may get a crate after a game and you need to buy a key to unlock it.

Let's hope they don't delay it once again eh.
Fun fact: In our Release Calendar, I put it down as a best guess for the 7th, I was one day off!

Great news! Better late than never and I hope my gaming pals don't mind me joining into the scene so late. This is just another story to support the argument that developers should build for multiplatform from the start. They could have avoided all this porting headache.

does this mean they'll check the OS to prevent other distros to launch the game?
anyway, won't buy it as long as it's just beta, but at least we'll have some feedbacks on the port (which shouldn't be that hard honestly considering the engine)
and geez, every single game is getting loot crates nowadays, even non-F2P...

Only supporting one distribution officially is fine for me, and the only logical choice for the game bundled with Steam Controllers (and thus Steam Machines I guess) is SteamOS. It will work on other Linuxes as well. I bet.

Let's see if they release it on September 8th.
It's still on beta but if it's released, it's better than nothing. I personally own the game, I don't need to buy it.
SteamOS is officially supported but most of the games have limited support too.
Most of the bugs are related to graphic drivers, not distros.

It probably won't check what distro you're running on, but support tickets from non-SteamOS users will probably go unanswered is my guess.

Maybe it's because I am not a native speaker, but somehow the combination of:
) ( , apologies sincerest btw
feels like someone delightfully shoving a big, stinky middle finger up your nose, does it not?
Sure, cool there is at last some progression, but after the delay one would have expected a shiny, polished release annoncement and not a beta with potentually showstopping bugs as known issues...
Would normally not even mind the delay that much or even beta testing it: f-ups happen and are easily forgiven, but companies have to seriously brush up their communication skills regarding customers.
Think I may be waiting for the finished product here...

Well at least this is some good news. Man gamingonlinux has been cranking out sad stories about delays and never happenings all day. I'm super excited this is my daughter's favorite game.

Yeah, lots of bad news. But also surprises, like Dead Island Riptide and Two Worlds II on the Way. I think there are a couple about to hit I never thought would make it (Depth Charge). A lot of people making promises they can't keep but also some that keep their mouths shut and deliver out of the blue. Honestly I had all but given up on Rocket League.

They're adding micro-transactions... Sigh.

Good news, but let's see if it really happens - too much delay, too much broken promises for me...
"Also, this update will introduce their micro-transaction crate/key model."
This is indeed a reason not to play or support the game (for me, of course), but because I own it anyway (Steam Controller) I'll test it. Why not more paid DLCs? Why a random, lottery like model? I really dislike it - this is a bad kind of "low level psychology". I don't see any benefits. Do you like crate/keys - and if, why?

Give science a little more time. You might still have that baby if you want one. :)

From the release itself:
If the Crates and Keys system isn’t for you, then you can turn it off with a prompt the first time a Crate is dropped in-game or at any time via the Options menu. Should you decide to opt out, you will still receive random Crates when they occur, but you will not be notified, nor will they be displayed in your inventory unless you choose to turn the system back on.
Also reading the release, it seems most of the key proceeds go to future esports events.
I'm not seeing the crate/key system as a bad move.
EDIT: Added article quote in a quote block plus forgot to say that I've been waiting for this so long that the instant it's officially shown on steam, I'm gonna buy it! Absolutely wonderful news (and absolutely atrocious communication from Psyonix, but we don't know what are the reasons for the silence and constant yanking the chain, so I don't really mind)
