Dungeon Rushers was already covered in this previous GOL article, and it has moved to a full release two months ago, on September 6th. The developers promised to keep updating the game, something they actually did until one month ago, though they claim there are more upcoming updates.
At the current moment, out of 274 Steam user reviews, 227 are positive. Still, with the new Steam reviewing system, the game is labelled with overall “Mostly Positive” reviews, a lukewarm classification that made feel the developers upset, as it’s evident in this announcement they made, where they basically request players to either add positive reviews or to refund the game without leaving a negative writing.
Although I understand the reasons of their complaints, I didn’t find this course of action they suggested as appropriate, since I think people should decide to post their reviews (or not) without the interference or influence from the developers. Strangely, despite the fact that there is a demo available at IndieDB, the developers didn’t include it on the Steam store page, which would have made more sense, along with an announcement like “Since the new reviewing system affected negatively the game score, we bring you here this demo so that you can check the quality of our game by yourself”, or something like that.
Anyway, I played the demo until completion, and I agree with the thoughts expressed by Liam in his article: it is an entertaining game. I would add that even though you can exit the levels immediately once you find the exit, you’ll enjoy the game more if you instead explore every dungeon until there isn’t any room left. Also, despite the fact that the game is basically unlocking new rooms and finding the exit, there are enough features that stops it becoming repetitive. It isn’t a groundbreaking game or an ambitious masterpiece, but it never aims for that; it focuses on being relatively simple, light-hearted and entertaining, and it succeeds in achieving those goals. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the main criticism of the “Most Helpful” negative reviews: the game mechanics don’t change or evolve in the full product, so if you’re expecting a gradual increase of complexity, you’re likely to be disappointed. So keep this final aspect in mind before deciding to buy the game or not.
