'AI War II' [Kickstarter] from Arcen Games is real and is currently in need of funds on Kickstarter, with Linux fully planned as a day-1 release.
Arcen are looking for $299,400 so they have some ways to go, but they have 30 days and already have nearly £10K.
I have a lot of respect for Arcen Games, even though their latest game 'In Case of Emergency, Release Raptor' was stopped and given out free, they dealt with it really quite well. So I do continue to respect them.
From the FAQ "Will the game support day-one Linux and OSX?":
QuoteOh come on, of course. :) You know we love you guys! Always good to check, and we should have said that up top somewhere, but we just take it for granted so much we don't always think about it.
I hope to see this one funded!
About the game
AI War 2 is the sequel to 2009's AI War Fleet Command. Like the original, AI War 2 is a real-time strategy game with elements of tower defense and grand strategy that pits you against a smart and deadly AI.
Also like the original, AI War 2 is an asymmetric game. The AI does not play by your rules: it is much more powerful than you, has no supplies you can disrupt, and its resources are literally infinite. Your successes strengthen the AI's focus on you, requiring you to balance immediate needs against long term costs.
The game essentially sounds like an improvement on every single aspect of AI War the original, and that's exciting.
It's incredibly intimidating, at I'm rubbish at RTS, so I'm hoping to eventually co-op with a friend, but my internets is shits.

That being said, Arcen games has a good history of treating their audience well, so if it gets funded the chances of the game getting released as promised is as close to 100% as is humanly possible.
I played the original AI War with a couple of friends. Out of several runs only once we've achieved victory on "very easy" difficulty. It was a game full of sweat and nerves, especially after we've defeated one of the two AIs and it only became more difficult. But we managed to hit the second AI with everything we had. I can say for sure it was the most satisfying victory I can remember (and all we've got is a big message "YOU WIN"; I'd never think such a simple victory screen can fill me with a pure joy). Was a well deserved, accomplished victory, the result of teamwork and serious efforts. The game also has an awesome OST, one of the best I've ever heard. If AI War 2 would be "more of the same but easier to manage and get into", it will be a huge success for hardcore RTS fans.
