So Halloween is fast approaching, and you want to play something scary, here’s some good ones to try out.

It’s tough choosing which games, as honestly, we don’t really have all that many good quality horror games. There’s a lot of junk out there!

This list is in no particular order.

I will start with two I think a lot of you might have overlook, then onto the biggies!

image
Monstrum [Steam] - Can you hear footsteps? This game is pretty damn scary. It’s a randomized horror game, where you could be up against one of three unique monsters, and you’re trapped on a ship. You need to find a way to escape, but will you be able to before it finds you?

There’s multiple ways to escape the ship, but with the random monster and random item locations, it does make it a little difficult. A really fun experience if you’re after something a bit different that’s quite well done.

Among the Sleep [Steam, GOG]- This one hit me hard. I 100% completed it during a livestream and I did not see the end coming at all. Pretty powerful story once you finish it too. Highly recommend this one, don’t overlook it! The unique perspective of playing as a toddler was quite brilliant, and the developers did very well with the setting.

It doesn’t have realistic graphics, it’s doesn’t have big action scenes, but it has a thick atmosphere that will swallow your nerves whole and spit them back out at you.

Alien Isolation [Steam] - Even if you’re not a big fan of the Alien universe, this game is still brilliant. It looks fantastic, it feels scary and it has a pretty decent story to it too. Lots of twists and turns that will keep you going.

The absolute feeling of dread of being found and eaten at any point by this vicious creature, it’s heart-pounding and terrific.

image
Dying Light [Steam] - Okay, not exactly a horror game, but if you still haven’t tried it and you have decent enough hardware you might find it becomes a little on the scary side at night. The fast and insanely strong creatures that come out at night are flipping terrifying, I’ve only gone out at night in Dying Light maybe 7 or 8 times in the 45 hours I’ve put into it (half of those are times the game made me!). Hell, even during the day a lot of scenes in this game made me jump. Just ignore the pants ending to the first part of the game before the massive DLC.

image
SOMA [Steam, GOG] - The latest from Frictional Games set far in the future below the sea. Will you find out what is going on?

Truthfully, I struggled with SOMA a lot and still haven’t gotten too far. I absolutely adore the setting, but I kept on getting lost with where to go and what to do. It’s scary for sure, and it looks damn good, but it also has puzzle elements to it which didn’t sit too well with me on my last try.

image
Outlast [Steam, GOG] - It’s just too damn scary for me, every single moment of it feels so intense you could cut the tension with a knife. I forced the girlfriend to play it for you on GOL’s 7 year birthday (see here somewhere after the middle), and I still refuse to play it again.

That entire game was designed specifically to make my skeleton jump out of my skin, and bugger off without me. Can you tell it scares me?

What will you be playing this Halloween? Let us know in the comments!

And yes, we will be subjecting ourselves to the awaiting horrors for your viewing pleasure in a special Halloween livestream—send help, as I’m a big manbaby. Seriously, I’ve watched the film “Aliens” likely 20-30 times and the Alien Queen still sends shivers up my spine. I might just make the girlfriend do it!

I hope 2017 gives us a few more decent horror titles, so I can expand my top list.

Costume Quest. The most Halloweenish game ever.

Tomb Raider may not be particularly scary, but it's pretty gore, so it would fit I guess.

If you haven't done it already, play the Penumbra games. They are a bit dated graphically, but have a great atmosphere, story, and physics engine. Amnesia TDD is also great.

Also I would highly suggest Reveal the Deep. It's a small 2D game priced at €0.99 on Steam. Despite the price I found it to be very well made and actually creepy.

I really wish that Ghost Theory would have been ready this season.

Made my sister play outlast, she couldn't play once using the camera to see in the dark became mandatory(first hour of the game).

Played it with a friend then, after a few hours you start getting how poorly the artificial intelligence is designed and it doesn't scares you much then.

Good game though.

I enjoyed layers of fear, scary and small enough to go through in one sitting.

I started playing it on hard. Fuck me, that was not a good idea. I think I need to restart it.
