VR support for Linux has been lacking and the communication around it has been pretty damn poor by Valve and HTC, but it seems this is about to change at SteamDevDays.

This image was shared by Pierre-Loup Griffais of Valve:

There will be plenty of talks across today and tomorrow, and I've seen plenty of developers chatting about it in my list of Twitter followers. Sounds like a lot of excitement around SteamDevDays.

I am really excited to see the videos of the talks afterwards, and hopefully we will get a real announcement on when Linux support for the HTC Vive will actually land. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Uncharted trilogy for Linux VR confirmed!

Trilogy? You mean like in number 3. And we are talking about Valve and VR, that only can mean Half-Life 3 confirmed as Linux VR exclusivity.

... or at least HLVR on Linux?

Finally. It was about time! And maybe when they will be done with this they can look into making Steam Broadcast work on Linux too.

Yes! This has been a HUGE annoyance to me and many others for a LONG time now. Judging by this new light on VR, maybe we'll finally see it.

Wow, I was really starting to get concerned what is going on with their Linux support for VR, seems like Valve will never forget about Linux, they are making it stronger gaming platform slowly but surely :)
Honestly, though, slowly is the best way in my opinion. Although, I definitely am awaiting the day when AAA devs make Linux ports themselves, instead of only outsourcing porting teams(don't get me wrong, I appreciate what Feral and the like are doing, but it's probably bad for only a handful of teams to be responsible for too many games).

I think this plays a core role here.

1. The lab is build with Unity.
2. Unity works with vulkan in a preview build of that editor.
3. The linux box with the label is for a conference about vulkan.

Is for that reasons that unity is pushing vulkan on their editor? was valve waiting for vulkan to release steamvr on linux? wow!! i need many answers :D

Very excited! I hope it will be an article about these SteamDevDays too...

By the way, Vive for Linux is useless without games... Hope to see "The Lab" ported too!

I want to try VR really bad but:
1)my pc can't run it for now
2)the VR alone costs a lot (I mean Vive)
3)I don't have enough space in my room to play

If someone have a Vive to gift, I'm here...

Points for optimism :D

I know this is starting to be a very bad joking. But we need some title like hl3 for linux for a month before it goes out on windows. Could boost the Linux user base, Judging by the small playerbase Linux still have I dont see any point in VR for linux.
At the monent VR is very expensiv for the avrage consumer and you need a beast of a pc to play.
Most of the titles I know of atleast only support Windows, and some very few mac.

I know some new tech will come to the VR headset I dunno if its the next generation or if it can be applyed to this to, but it will make it less demanding on the hardware required.
But who knows, maybe valve got it all figured out already, and to be fair, its not really fair to force a player base to an os or a system. Like the console wars seems to do now adays.

But... does it work with the Note 7 and does it explode?

I think that we would need a few totally exclusive titles, this is what would really help to bring few gamers to linux at least to dual boot... But developers can't afford to produce a great linux exclusive that majority of people won't even buy and play in their opinion... and if people buy Xbox one and PS4 for few exclusives I'm 100% sure that they would install linux for few exclusives as well :)

PSVR released tomorrow....
Yep, and this is the one I'll be buying.
Reasons being, it's cheaper, works with the PS4, will eventually work with Linux (some one WILL write a driver), and has 1080@60fps.

Read your post then this crops up,

Yeah me too. Great reviews, comfiest headset for glasses wearers. Best lenses too apparently.
I'm sure Sony will deliver some top notch games, not something I can say for valve.
Also I don't have the living room space, or cash for a vive, although I do hope it succeeds on linux eventually.

PSVR for me too, although I know I'll get Vive in a heartbeat once it works with Linux together with some worthwhile VR games.

Valve could probably afford it. With there money making client ^^.

They absolutely could, but they said it's against their philosophy (they like to make better PC gaming on all platforms and don't like exclusives and closing things down, which is one of the reasons why they are investing into Linux).
bubexel 12 Oct 2016
well, almost 60% games that appear on steam are windows exclusive
Joeyboots80 12 Oct 2016
Very excited about this development! Can't wait to see what's in store! :)
