Mad Max [Feral Mini Site] is officially being released on the 20th of October for Linux & SteamOS, it’s finally coming!

After initially being confirmed for Linux way back in March 2015, we finally have confirmation that not only is the Linux port real, but it’s coming damn soon too.

From the press release:

Quote“We’re delighted to be bringing Mad Max to Mac and Linux PC,” said David Stephen, Managing Director at Feral Interactive, “With its exhilarating combat, outlandish characters and beautiful end-of-the-world visuals, Mad Max perfectly captures the atmosphere and thrill of The Wasteland.”

System requirements:
Intel i5 or AMD FX8350 3.4 GHz CPU
8GB RAM
SteamOS 2.0 or Ubuntu 16.04 or better.

The game also requires an NVIDIA 660ti series graphics card or better, running driver version 367.35 or later. AMD and Intel GPUs are not supported at release.

If you want more information on AMD support in future, you can see this comment from Edwin who works at Feral, copied below:

Edwin, Feral InteractiveDue to various issues with Mesa we will not be supporting AMD on release. We only can officially support drivers if they meet the quality needed and sadly Mesa isn't quite there yet as it has a few issues and edge cases. It was a super close call but in the end we won't say a game is officially supported unless it runs great using release versions of the drivers and kernel.

However we developed the game using AMD cards as well as Nvidia so if you install the latest Mesa beta drivers and other updates as needed it runs it's just not at a level where we can provide official support as some edge cases will exist. Hopefully once all the Mesa developments get into a stable release version and all the related kernel improvements also are in a stable release then support for Mad Max and similar complex titles will be easier/possible.

Summary: AMD is unsupported meaning we don't recommend you purchase it on AMD GPUs, however we have don a lot of work towards support which should happen once all the improvements to Mesa/Kernel are in stable branches.

Releasing another game so soon after Dawn of War II [port report here], Feral sure are busy! I will hopefully have my usual report on the game up at release. Not long to go folks! Are you excited? Let me know in the comments!

After the news about Civ VI possibly not coming to Linux, this was a very well timed announcement.

Guys, hats off to you. Your level of commitment to mesa is great. I've seen at least two bug reports filed during the last week by Feral's James Legg (even one with a patch to fix it - https://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=e33f31d61f5e9019f8b0bac0378dfb8fd1147421 -) which I believe were related to this game. Thank you a lot, Feral!!

Thanks, I'm glad you're so appreciative of our efforts :) We've supported Mesa since our first release (XCOM 1 Intel Iris Pro only), slowly over time it has become our target driver on AMD as well as Intel. We do test against AMDGPUPRO however for our latest games Mesa has proven to be the driver that allows us to get the performance and stability needed on a wide range of AMD hardware. We constantly monitor all drivers on every game we work on so this is a constantly moving target as both Mesa and AMDGPUPRO improve over time.

I think that fix you mention is for a different game in the future not Mad Max. Most of the Mad Max issues are known issues inside Mesa and not ones we have specifically opened for Mad Max.

Woohoo, that sounds nice, I think I will pick this one up in a coming sale.

Nice! Bought it a few days ago when it was -75% on steam - speculating that it'll be released on linux.

Except, now it counts as a Windows sale, and Feral get none of the money for it.
I don't care. Wouldn't have bought it anyway if it wasn't that cheap.

Enjoy the game, we've had a blast making it for Linux!

Hopefully next time you'll be able to buy a Tux version and help fund more games coming to Linux :)
Thanks. I guess next time will be when you people release dirt rally - perhaps even for the full price because I'm r(e)ally waiting for this game (sorry for the ridiculous pun).

And it's people like you that help to reduce our already small sale count for developers. Nice one, not.
I deeply apologize for my lack of idealism.

Not everyone is always in a good financial situation and if he found a deal why not buy it if he didn't intend to otherwise... Yes, it's really nice to support porting teams and companies but don't judge him if he rushed to buy it before Feral finished porting it :) There are a lot of us who will still support great guys from Feral!

There are countries were the game price is ten times higher (relative to the income). How much is Mad Max, 30 Euro? Would you still buy it at 300 Euros to support Feral/Linux?
Edit: to be more clear, when you're dealing with such high prices, sometimes you can't resist a good deal.

Thanks for defending my point - Just to make that clear: I'm well aware that I don't support linux gaming with buying games for almost no money that eventually possibly even count as a windows sale. I just think that I'm not supposed to pay extra money just because steam hasn't been able to implement a proper way to determine how many people play which games on which OS.

And of course I could just wait for the game to release and wait for the port and afterwards wait another year for the next sale that puts the game to my price-tag. I'm actually a patient man... but obviously not patient enough for being a "real" linux gamer. Sorry for that.

The thing is, Valve can’t hold onto the money forever after you buy a game; publishers would like to see some of it sooner rather than later ;)
Good point. That explains some things.

So yes they determine on which platform you play, but it’s only during the first one or two (?) weeks after it was bought.
Then feral better hurry up with the port to get my share of the 10€ I paid ^^

But jokes aside... I really think if people like me are a problem for porters then they would find a way to stop me from pre-buying games for cheap. For example they could just not announce a port in advance or just max. one or two weeks before release.

However it's their business and I buy games for playing, not for charity.

I'll second this - thanks Feral :)

The experience with AMD Mesa has been brilliant on most titles; Tomb Raider is excellent - even Mordor is running well now (git versions).

I'll be picking up Mad Max and Warhammer as soon as they're out!
Feral already has been paid out by Warner, so We don't have to give a single cent to them...
Unless that Feral acquired the publishing rights for Mac and Linux...
If that is the case, yes, they deserve money for job...and We deserve a refund if they did a bad job.

... or they at least get a share per sold copy, which seemed to be the case for the past releases.
Liam Dawe Oct 6, 2016
For anyone who might have read Softpedia, no it will not support AMD GPU as mentioned in the article. Softpedia have it wrong.
Skudra Oct 7, 2016
not amd again. this sucks

That's how all Feral games work.

So you're solely paid by game copy sells and don't get money from the studio/original publisher?
edddeduck_feral Oct 7, 2016

AMD's drivers are improving but they aren't at the level of Nvidia (yet). Right now Mesa has a slight lead overall and is the driver we usually support for the last few games. However we're constantly evaluating all drivers and we always aim to get the game running on both if possible.

For Mad Max the game runs on both Mesa and AMDGPUPRO but not at a level where we could support it officially due to various issues.

Correct, we're the publisher on Linux for all our games.

Like Edwin said, Feral are the publisher for all of their games. That alone should have told you it was not Feral being paid off, likely the other way around. Which is another reason I have a lot of respect for what Feral do. They seem to be the ones actively going to these publishers and developers for the ports (a lot of these ports are games people have highly requested too, like this one!).

On top of that they are active in the community, have helped with drivers and so on.

So the requestinator might be (at least a little bit) more than just some social media fun...?

It's 100% real not just a social media fun thing, it's not the only way we decide to license games of course but popular requests are taken on board when we look at what games to license for Linux (and Mac).

Luckily Linux users tastes for games and our own tastes are pretty similar so usually you guys are just reinforcing what games we think are awesome :)

That's very cool! I wonder if many people think (like me) it's just a fun thing. But either way you're getting your input. So I'll continue to feed it with Bethesda, Bethesda and... hm, I'll think about the third.

Need to think a bit more about it. But yes, Fallout and Elder Scrolls is what I'm missing by far the most after dumping Windows.

So basically Metal Gear Solid 2 + Twisted Metal. Awesome.

Actually, it's Shadow of Mordor + Cars, literally.
