You don't get to chat, you communicate through emotes, symbols and sounds.
It sounds like it's some sort of experimental social playground, which is where the developers description 'forum in games clothing' comes from.
Has anyone picked it up and played it? Tell us what you thought in the comments, I'm keen to know the point of it.

Vast, teeming with life and now a unique social experience. Might and Delight invites you to frolic freely in the lush fields of Meadow - a unique multiplayer sandbox.
Unlike traditional titles from the Shelter franchise, in Meadow the more time spent embracing the gameplay features in the world, the more you receive. Owning any previous Shelter related title(s) or products will also unlock in-game content. The open landscape also provides ample room for exploration with new patches and additions promised.
Band together with other animals, form uneasy allies or choose to explore alone. Whatever you decide, the open park life is one you will want to immerse yourself in.

This reminds me of attempts at a "3D web". Being a game, primarily, might save Meadow from the shortcomings of that 90s era pipe dream.

I have to say, I never got what all the fuss is with these "exploration" orientated games. I get the idea of exploration in some sort of open world game like Skyrim or the like, but considering there's not much to do or interact with in these cases, it seems besides the point. Sort of like walking around a 3D painting.
That said, I like the idea of emote communication. They should implement something like that in games like ARK where the immersion is completely ruined by people repeating "dank memes" or whatever terrible music they have on in the background.

ARK does have a whole selection wheel of emotes, in fact. I guess nobody uses them?

it's so cheap I picked it up and gave it a whirl. First twenty minutes I was on my own and the environment got a bit same-y. After a while I found the map feature, met up with a veritable menagerie of forest creatures, and romped about the environment breaking up big rocks for XP.
Think of it as a less-pretty, less-immersive Proteus, but with more interaction and stuff to do.

This looks to be the same thing as the old game Endless forest. It wasn't so much a game as a virtual relaxation sim. It was awesome.

The concept appears to be similar to what the devs of the poor, doomed, Wander were trying to do. Non-language interactions in an exploration based environment without combat. Unfortunately while their hearts were in the right place the whole thing just fell apart upon release, which was a shame.
