Shadow Warrior 2 was due to get a Linux version, then suddenly information on it vanished from the Steam page and Humble Store. The plot thickens from there.

When queried about it, a developer for Flying Wild Hog blamed it on a publisher decision (Devolver Digital) not to have Linux at day-1. I personally spoke to Devolver on twitter, who claimed this was false and they didn't know why the developer said so. That developer very quickly deleted their post after this, and then made a new one that was entirely different.

Now, the German games magazine Gamestar had a twitch stream of a preview version of the game with Paweł Książek of the developer Flying Wild Hog. They asked watchers' questions as well, including this one...

gamestarWhich graphics API will the game use and will there be a Linux version?

Paweł, DeveloperLinux version - no, I don't think so.

Paweł Książek is level designer, so he's likely not the one to make decisions on this.

We also know that Aaron from Knockout Games who ported the previous Shadow Warrior will not be in on the porting job this time around, as he is too busy.

It's still possible there's yet more miscommunication going on, so don't lose hope just yet.

I also emailed Devolver a while ago and was told that a Linux version was planned, just not day 1. The game has had Linux support listed on its Steam store page and reported all over the place for a very long time so I can't see how they couldn't have noticed and corrected it sooner if it wasn't planned.

My guess is that it's been removed from the store page because it's releasing soon and the Linux version won't be available at launch, and that this is just a case of miscommunication.

It would be a shame if this did not make it over, as the first one ran really well for me and was a pretty solid port overall.

Seems like someone that has no idea what is going on talking about things they have no business talking about.

Hm. But a month ago, they also had listed in the Humble Store. Seems to me like something happened since then.

As far as I can tell though, that forum topic was not made by a developer or a member of the team?

Regardless, their backwards and forwards in this doesn't fill me with confidence.

I sure hope no one has purchased it already.

It's a "pinned" thread though so I'd expect them to have checked it over... plus I don't see how they could miss all the various articles and discussions about Linux support being confirmed and not do anything to correct it if it was untrue. Of course it's possible that the plans have changed though & the news hasn't been communicated to everyone involved.

This kind of thing is exactly why I decided to wait until the Linux version is available before buying (this, and wanting to ensure it gets counted as a Linux sale).

Yet another linux-version mystery. There seems to be an ongoing problem with identifying the proverbial "the buck stops here", when it comes to the be or not to be, of linux ports.

Very frustrating from a gamers perspective, it would be better if everyone involved would just utterly deny any plans of a linux version, as long as they weren´t 90% certain one would be made.

This is starting to become a chronic issue with big name announcements.
