Shadow Warrior 2 was due to get a Linux version, then suddenly information on it vanished from the Steam page and Humble Store. The plot thickens from there.
When queried about it, a developer for Flying Wild Hog blamed it on a publisher decision (Devolver Digital) not to have Linux at day-1. I personally spoke to Devolver on twitter, who claimed this was false and they didn't know why the developer said so. That developer very quickly deleted their post after this, and then made a new one that was entirely different.
Now, the German games magazine Gamestar had a twitch stream of a preview version of the game with Paweł Książek of the developer Flying Wild Hog. They asked watchers' questions as well, including this one...
See this video at 43:55, partly in German, partly in English (direct link to the question):

Paweł Książek is level designer, so he's likely not the one to make decisions on this.
We also know that Aaron from Knockout Games who ported the previous Shadow Warrior will not be in on the porting job this time around, as he is too busy.
It's still possible there's yet more miscommunication going on, so don't lose hope just yet.
Thanks to Eike for letting us know!

May be contacting Leszek Godlewski makes sense to ask thins question.

I have no interest in this particular game, but I have to admit the amount of "Now we support Linux! Now we don't!" bait-and-switching from developers is getting a bit over the top lately. Honestly? I find it disrespectful to make promises that you don't keep down the road. Don't confirm or announce a game for Linux if you're not 100% committed to it! If you're not certain if it can or will be done, don't announce it or least don't commit either way. I don't think it's too much asked for.

Would probably be a good idea. Not sure how he'd respond though, I think he's been getting crap from people about Darksiders since he left Nordic(or whatever related company he worked for).

Unfortunately, that appears to be a much more general problem than just Linux releases.

Hmm Darksiders - now that is a game I'd like to play...

Same here, I threw it at the Feral requestinator.

I remember back in 2015 I was thinking: in 2016 the bullshit will be over and developers will become serious about Linux versions (not announcing stuff that they don't intend to do). But looks like I was wrong, we are getting even more bullshit than last year.

Yeah, we're still lacking in the games department. But it's getting a lot better. If we actually get CIV VI, Shadow Warrior 2, Deus Ex MD, Homefront Revolution, Hitman and Street Fighter V I think more developers/publishers will start following suit. I'm sure we'll get Deus Ex and Hitman as Feral are doing them, the rest...... Maybe.
Hopefully VP and Aspyr come back out with some projects pretty soon.
The back and forth is VERY annoying; or the for sure, we're working on it, we're looking at it, I don't know what you are talking about. Makes you wish they would keep their mouths shut until it was set in stone.

Ha, ha... It was me who asked the question on Twitch... and I really was disappointed. But my gut-feeling tells me, that we will see a Linux port in the future. It seemed that Pawel even wasn't aware of the existing port of the first game. He also said something strange: "First on PC, Steam and Gog..." ... PC, Steam and Gog?! I expected something like "Day 1 on Windows and a bit later on Linux" or "only on Windows" but PC, Steam and Gog sounds weird... as if Steam and Gog were not PC related. I also wanted to ask a bit further but I didn't since I had to ask my question 3 times until it was answered and even only partially, because he left the API question unanswered :-(

From that mentioned steam pinned thread:
FWH is a small studio and we need to pick our battles carefully. We decided to focus on good single player experience and add optional co-op to that. Despite that, we had to delay some things like consoles or Linux/Mac. We simply don't have the required manpower and budget to do good PvP on top of planned features.

Cool - thanks!

I thought about writing it down as well for the article, but as it's not directly related to Linux, I didn't. I would have written it as "First in PC (Steam and GoG), then...". Sounds like a suitable answer to me, as people often want to know if it comes on GoG as well.
The answer "Linux version - no, I don't think so.", if listened to, sounded quite firm to me. But I'm still not sure if he had got a clue about everything he answered. :) What's more disturbing to me is the Linux version vanishing from the stores.

Sounded good on first sight, but it seems to be a copy of this old list:

That steam thread sounds like a more reliable source than something said by a random dev in a random stream.

Is it just me or lately devs are backing out of the Linux support more often than before? I think this might be a delayed response to the Valve Steam Machines fiasco.

Maybe its like Divinity Original Sin. They promised Linux Support a little to lightly. Then they had middleware problems, then they extendet the engine with Linux Support, with DOS2 in Mind, then they finally delivered the Linux Version. Everything seems ready for part 2, and yet they refrain from making any more promises. Its understandable...

Well, Shadow Warrior 2 has now been released, and the people who've bought it, for Windows, seem to be loving it. Sounds like it is well optimised, and runs well even on older graphics hardware, and the gameplay is great.
Fingers crossed for a Linux release *soon*. I, for one, am very interested in getting this on Linux and enjoying it. (Yes, I know it may never happen, but then... look at Mad Max and Rocket League.)
