Update: The developer posted in our comments, stating that Linux is now their most profitable platform and it's all going to charity.

tagline-image
The game 'Can't Drive This' [Steam] only recently came to Linux, and the developers have decided that 100% of October's revenue made from Linux sales will go to a penguin charity.

It's an amusing sounding game too, as the track is built by someone else as you're racing. Sounds challenging, and fun!

To qualify they ask that you buy the game from the Steam client on Linux, or from the Steam store in your browser on Linux to be 100% sure it's counted correctly. So, no buying it from other stores ;)

They also listed some reasons apart from money that developers should support Linux:
QuoteLinux is a free platform, supporting it is a good decision, morally

The Linux community is thankful for every Linux port you build and will talk about your game. There are also a lot of lists and databases that refer linux games, bringing you traffic and links to your website. The links to your website will increase the rankings of your game's website or landing page in search engines.

Linux users tend to be technically talented and might be able to give you very qualified feedback, and usually send you output logs and detailed information about their machines, in a support or feature request.

Find more info about it all here.

I think they might be my new favourite developer.

Sadly, I can't even spare the £6.99 for it right now due to a few big events coming up that require me to really save the pennies (thanks Ysblokje for picking me up a copy!), but I hope plenty of you will in my place with me posting it up! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

What happens if I buy the bundle with ChromaGun and Can't Drive This?

EDIT: Went ahead and bought the bundle

I'm not entirely sure, to be honest - we haven't tested that yet. Logic dictates if purchased on Linux it should count as a Linux purchase for both, but no guarantees. I'll see if we can figure that one out!

I also just bought the Bundle of Joy as well, as Chromagun also looks like a game I will enjoy and I wanted to support you guys directly as well as your charity initiative. I think its really good of you to donate a whole months platform sales to charity, you have a new follower!

I'm thinking of buying this buy I want to make sure it's fun.

Yes this has gotten my attention more than most marketing tactics and I'm okay with that because I know that I'm in control and no one will manipulate me into making a decision I don't choose myself.

How does the game play? I would like to hear if its like anything else and see if it fits a niche for me --

From the steam page I'm not sure if I can discern if it has full controller support - I nearly always only buy games with full controller support as I really am collecting games for the full-screen big picture experience.

Also - looking for Steam Cloud saves, however Split Screen multiplayer is a HUGE selling point as I'm collecting games to play with friends on my steam machine in person.

Thank you all so much for your support, folks! This is so awesome!

Currently, driving fully supports controllers and other peripherals (one player managed to hook up a steering wheel to it). As of right now, building does not work with a controller yet. It's on our roadmap, but it'll likely be a few weeks before we get to implement it. The same goes for cloud save (although, currently there's not much that needs saving).

That's fantastic that my X360 controller sounds like it'll be plug and play, great.

The Steam Cloud thing is just prefered - my only other real question probably would be - is there single-player? like computer generated map progression?

Sometimes I really just like to chill and play vs AI even if they do become predictable in games. I liked the video & I'm so happy it doesn't follow movie trailer layout where it cuts to black.

I find that so annoying these days

Unfortunately not. Technically, you can play alone, but that's far from chill. We do have online multiplayer, though.

My friend (who has a weekly gaming livestream he does) and I bought copies of this and played it together for a little bit last Thursday.

I set up my Steam Controller for driving with no issues, and just used my mouse for building.

A couple things we both noticed:

* The green transparent block view on the building side makes it really hard for you to see exactly what block it is you're about to put down - particularly when you're given a corner piece, or anything else you need to rotate to be driveable. We had to keep glancing at the 'next block' preview in the far upper right to try and judge what it was we were about to put down.

* When you end up having to turn, so you're travelling and building horizontally rather than vertically, it would be nice for blocks to come in already rotated 90 degrees, so it's not a mad rush to rotate every single block you place down until you can turn the driver again into another vertical path.

* Unless we just couldn't see it in our very very quick blind playthrough, we really could use a button or mode to facilitate having the Driver and Builder switch places in the middle of a play session, without having to back out to the main menu and then set up the game again. We figured out that whoever hosts is the driver, of course.

* Some kind of starting countdown or gating when starting a map would be neat, but that's a nice-to-have. I.e. the low speed countdown/timer doesn't start until either a) the driver touches the controls or b) the builder places their first block? We found ourselves fighting our machines' loading times in a mad dash to get started as soon as we heard the sound start up.

Anyway, if you want two people's very first impressions on a blind playthrough (warning: excited cussing!) ->

I think you guys have a great idea and it holds a lot of promise as an awesome party game! I can totally see setting this up and then having everyone trading places in kind of a double-hotseat mode. :)

Fine. I've bought it! Will have a play in a bit.

I tried it. Game is nuts :-)
