Good news for Arma 3 [Steam] fans today, as Bohemia Interactive have released their next roadmap. They have stated work is going to continue on the Linux version! Not only that, but they are going to make Arma 3 64bit too.

For those living under a rock: Arma 3 has an experimental Linux version done by Virtual Programming.

Taken from their roadmap:
QuoteWork with our partners on experimental ports is set to continue, too.

And also:
QuoteTo provide a few examples: later this year, we'll publish 64-bit executables to Dev-Branch

Of course, the 64bit support for the Linux version will come later, as the Linux version is always behind the Windows version. Still, it's great news that it will continue to be updated (this shows Bohemia are pleased with it!) and an eventual 64bit version will improve the game even further.

Their wording is still quite careful though, it doesn't sound like they are ready to fully commit to having it as an official version yet. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Amazing, I really hope they focus on this game. This was a game that I had wished to be on Linux to play in my spare time and now it's actually happening. ArmA 3 and 7 Days To Die for the win.

Great news! I just wished they'd incorporate libSDL, libvpx, OpenGL in the engine so it doesn't need to be rewrapped after every iteration.

Hm, still marked as "experimental". I must admit I still hesitate to buy it if you never know if linux support is dropped the next day. Is it not possible to say somehting like "we will support linux ( in experimental state ) for the next year for sure" ?

Well, kind of. I mean, their Linux version is always behind the Windows version, so I can't play with my friends from Linux :(

I've always wondered what Arma played like -- Full Controller support lacking is a big deal for me too.

I mean is it like Battlefield, CoD, PlanetScape, Halo, CS:GO or what -- at the $40 price tag I have to know more what I'm getting than just go on a whim and throw 10$ at a game and hope its good.

I am fully aware of that but I meant as to up to date as the Windows one, until then I can't play with my friends sadly.

It plays nothing like the games you've mentioned. It's a Mil-Sim so it's heavily focused on realism and simulation. As for controller support that isn't even possible as practically every key on the keyboard is used, and then they have a ton of key combos on top of that, so it would be way to much for a controller to handle.

Why are the bothering with a 32bit version when almost everyone who is likely to want this game is already using 64bit Linux?

Maybe just because many developers are more experienced with coding x86 apps as well as debugging them? Maybe just because there's no need to go for x64 unless you have any advantages by that - having more RAM available to assign to the App - if needed - could be one of those. Most of the time the performance won't be any better.

There was no 64bit version to port, there still isn't.
