Ballistic Overkill [Steam], the cheap and fun online FPS has a major update. Included in this update are the first lot of skins to grab for free after matches complete and the progression system to unlock weapons is now in too.
Note: I will be livestreaming the game tonight at 8PM UTC on Twitch http://www.twitch.tv/gamingonlinux, come watch or join in!
I've really enjoyed playing this game through different versions to watch it evolve and once it's finished it's going to be a really fantastic game.
Instead of having all weapons unlocked from the start, you now gradually unlock weapons for each class as you play them. This gives the game a big boost in drawing you in to come back, as you actually have things to work for other than just killing people. I'm a huge fan of FPS progression and customization, so this game really speaks to me.
The new weapon skins system is nicely done, with you getting free to open crates at the end of the game like this:
I should note that skins do not change any statistics, these are just for-fun unlocks. There is zero pay-to-win nonsense in this game which is why I love it. Pay once, play, enjoy.
For those wondering about the size of the community to play with, I've been playing it for months now and I've never had an issue. Today I went into an empty server and within two minute it was half full, another minute later and it was full. It actually has a pretty dedicated community for an Early Access title.
The new interface that dropped in the last patch is a vast improvement in all areas too, the game now really looks the part. It was one the most slick interfaces I've ever seen in an indie FPS, it's quite impressive really. It's pretty great that when you unlock a new skill in the after-match screen, you can easily swap it with an existing skill. The level of detail in the new UI is really nice.
As icing on the cake for me, the ability to crouch down can be set to either holding the button down, or as a toggle for crouching or standing up again. I love that, as I hate games that force you to hold the button down to crouch.
You can find the full update notes here.
I fully recommend the game, as it's great fun to play! It's my go-to game when I want to run around shooting while not having to take anything too seriously.
It also helps that I'm not too bad at the game.

I know it's considered sacrilege to speak good of it in the gaming community but this is a key element that made Call of Duty multiplayer so enjoyable. Would you say this game provides a similar experience?

Quoting: AnxiousInfusionIt didn't, until this update. I also entirely agree with you that what makes Call of Duty so damn fun (before they over-did the re-hashes) was the player customization.QuoteI'm a huge fan of FPS progression and customization, so this game really speaks to me.

It's not as in-depth as Call of Duty, but this is only the start.
It has certainly got me interested in Ballistic Overkill again, it just makes it feel like it's much more worth putting time into.
You can see what they are working on right now too: https://trello.com/b/Sw21AFJx/ballistic-overkill-public-task-lists-vote-on-what-you-want-in-the-game (they have lots of good stuff planned and generally deliver on them too!)
The maps even feel a little like CoD, as they are small, focused and interesting to play on.

Looks interesting. I really would like to play a CoD like game in the living room with a controller. According to steam site infos this game doesn't have controller support. Hope this will come in a future update.
