GOG are going all mysterious on us, with their Twitter account simply popping out a big teaser image for December 1st. Time to get our thinking hats on.

They sent this out without any kind of explanation:
image

What do you all think it is?

It could possibly be a new well known game being liberated from DRM, which they often tease out like this. This is most likely, since the image looks like it has some sort of claw (possibly a dragon).

It could also be some sort of christmas countdown event with games getting highlighted each day. This is easily possible and I believe (if memory serves me) that they have done something like that before.

It may even be the big "1.0" release of GOG Galaxy, which would be interesting as we might then finally get news of when it's actually coming to Linux.

Exciting, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high for it being Linux-related. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

The Mass Effect franchise and Dragon Age Inquisition were made by Bioware, no?

Yes. Though I've heard Dragon Age Origins is the only good game in the DA series and it's the last game made by "old Bioware". It was already released on GOG. Can't say anything about Mass Effect - I never played any of them and didn't research opinions either.

Only NWN, Witcher 2 and Kotor2 are based on the NWN engine which currently have Linux native ports.

Witcher 2 has nothing to do with Aurora engine. You mixed it up with Witcher 1.

NWN for Linux? Could be good...

Personally, I really doubt that them finally putting the Linux version of NWN up would warrant such a grand announcement. So I'd say that's probably not it.

I would hazard a guess, based on what people have observed so far, that there will be released a new Enhanced Edition version of Neverwinter Nights (and maybe NWN II as well). Earlier this year Beamdog released Enhanced versions of Baldur's Gate, BG2, and Icewind Dale.

If I remember correctly, there were earlier tries by Beamdog to get an enhanced edition of NWN going, but there were licensing issues, both with WotC and BioWare.

There was also some talk between Beamdog and people in the NWN modding scene a few months back, on their forums. Their forums are a bit leaky and somehow, a bit of the thread got public. Nothing really that made sense to anybody, so it's basically just a confirmation that certain people are talking to each other. Of course, the people in question couldn't say anything when asked, so I don't know anything real either.

Doesn't really have to mean anything, because it might not be related.

So it could be Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition. But it could also be something else Beamdog are working on. Or it could be something else entirely.

Also, I'd thing an Enhanced Edition of Neverwinter Nights would take way longer than that. But what do I know. :)

I sure would like to see that, especially if Linux were supported. On the other hand, I'm not sure what that would mean for xoreos?

NWN2 will not be coming to Linux

Yeah, I'd say that as well. NWN, KotOR, KotOR2 all have OpenGL renderers. But NWN2 replaced it with a Direct3D one. It also added tons of middleware: Granny, FaceFX, SpeedTree at least. I think they all support Linux now, but did they in the past? Would new versions of that still be able to use the old data files? I don't know.

The Witcher 1 also has replaced the renderer completely, so a Linux port of that wouldn't be easy either.

Mass Effect is excellent, I would be very happy if it came out for us. It does run pretty much perfectly in Wine, so it's not that big an issue anyway.

There are quite a few games on GOG which it would be trivial for them to "port" to Linux using Dosbox and they aren't doing it. They even recently put the DOS version of Wing Commander IV out, with the Windows version previously completely unusable in Wine, and it's set up for Windows only as well. So they just don't care too much. I treat their effort as "me, too" after Valve did it and that's about it.

GOG Galaxy for Linux would be a nice start,..

Hmmm... they already have the NWN games, don't they?
So the clue might be hidden in the 'publisher', Infogrames.

Which could only mean that SMURFS games are on their way to GOG.

I think that a cool marketing strategy would be to just do nothing tomorrow, and people will go insane, and they will get lots of attention :P

I'm pretty sure Valve has copyrighted that one.

Well.

As the wallpaper points, it is clear that it is related to Neverwinter Nights (the second part to be precise), and not others.

But what would be? a new game? a new edition?

I don't think so.

Maybe it's a sale (or hopefully a giveaway) of both the Neverwinter Nights games.

Dear Liam:

The games that do come to GOG for Linux are usually top notch. Installers run great and very few issues from me. I've bought Linux games from Humble Store and Itch that were more work to get going. While GOG doesn't do as much as they could for Linux the work they do is of good quality.

Indeed. GOG.com could do more for Linux, but so could Steam, or basically any other distributor. Most of the complaints come down to Galaxy not being on Linux, when it is not even out of Beta on Windows yet, and sour grapes over The Witcher III, which really is beside the point.

2016.12.01 has come... with Never Winter Night (a game with a Linux port) as Free...
but, if one of you have doubt, Never Winter Night come Free with WINDOWS EXCLUSIVE.

cheers for a new failure waiting for GAMINGONLINUX...

dear Liam... just stop GOG and CDPR propaganda!!!
there are full of shit...

The NWN port was at the time and still consists of a few unsupported binaries that were made to use the data from a Windows copy of the game. It was never commercially released and Bioware has not put out a single game with Linux support in the decade and a half since.

I do not see how GOG.com would be expected to change that.
