Planetary Annihilation: TITANS [Steam, Official Site] is one of the best traditional real time strategy games available on Linux. The good news is that it is still being supported, and it's about to get another huge update this time aimed at performance.

The game is about to get a big multi-threading pass with PTE 98721 (their form of Beta testing).

This will likely help a lot during larger battles, which was a big sore spot for the game.

Note: This update is for both PA and PA TITANS.

Changelog for the new PTE beta version:
- Local Server multi-threading across planets and AIs
- LZ4 compression for server mods
- AI improvements and multi-threaded
- Client and Server improvements
- Crash fixes and perf improvements. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I still didn't digest their price/DLC/Community policy.

I knew that some updates were planned for PA but this is first time I actually heard of multithreading. Large armies can slow down performance painfully.

Continuing to develop and support games costs a lot of money over time, producing a newer version with lots of new features is time consuming, not every developer can do that sort of thing for free. They continue to support both PA and PA Titans, PA got tons of free updates over it's life.

niiice. it is PA that originally started to tax my 8gig so a multithread would also be great

They're really doing everything they can to be Infamous huh?

I guess good and bad attention are both attention huh?

There was a part of me that wanted to try the new one but could never justify it after trying the first and having the mechanics not be the RTS I hoped it was.

Note: It seems the PTE is up to date for Linux, I misread what it said when you load up about version numbers and needing to edit a file to make it think it's an older version (likely to play online). Removed that note about it being outdated from the article to be clear.

That's because it wasn't a polished game when it was released and should have never been released when it was. Those "free updates" were patches, and them slowly attempting to deliver a full game. Every game should have free bug fixes and should be finished.
It wasn't the most polished game at release no, but tons of games have so many issues that never get fixed, I am personally thankful they have supported it as well as they have so far. It gained plenty of new features during these free patches, the kind of stuff other developers would have happily put into DLC, Uber aren't as evil as people keep trying to say they are.

Here's a interesting talk about the design and thoughts behind Titans:

Quoting: GuestYeah, they didn't create a new "DLC", instead they created "TITANS" and charged way more than a "normal" DLC
Stand-alone expansions has been the standard way old RTS games were updated. It's also more friendly to new users as there's no additional purchase required. Existing users all have a permanent 66% reduction for the upgrade which is a normal price for DLC (not to mention all Kickstarter and competitive players got a copy free).

Quoting: Guestwhile at the same time cleansing their negative reviews.
Why would you want outdated reviews that don't reflect the state of the game?
