EGOSOFT, who became pretty Linux-friendly in recent times are working on two new space simulation games! X Rebirth VR Edition will use Vulkan and they are starting to plan X4.
They say they will release X Rebirth VR Edition sometime in the first half of 2017. Hopefully by then the HTC Vive will actually have the Linux support nailed down.
From their press release:
As for X4, they aren't ready to talk about too many details, but they have taken a lot of feedback based on the release of X Rebirth, and how people expected it to be X4 (instead of the simplified game it was).
I imagine X4 will use Vulkan as well, as I doubt they would use an older engine when X Rebirth VR Edition is coming first on the new Vulkan-powered game engine.

I did reach out to the developer for comment on the Linux version of both games, but as of yet they have not replied.

I played Elite, Wingcommander, Freespace and a lot of other space games, but I like X the most. Welcome back, old friend!

It took over 2 years to bring X Rebirth to Linux. Hopefully it will be a bit faster this time ;-)

I recently asked them about Linux support. Bernd Lehahn, Managing Director, replied:
Quoting: Bernd LehahnThis is not decided yet. When it goes into the test it will at first be Windows only. As you know we do support Linux with our games as much as we can and if support for VR will allow it, we would love to also have the new X Rebirth VR edition on Linux. But this is not decided yet.

Even if it's just a possibility, linux support is great. More space game dev should do this!

I don't much care about X Rebirth VR, but I am hype as **** for X4. Please, please, please, please let this be the return to what X3 and X2 were and not another stripped down streamlined space sim like Rebirth. I want to be able to pilot a multitude of ships, including capital ships, again. I want to build a giant trading empire and amass a fleet that I can terrorize patrol the galaxy with. Just give me X3 with better graphics and less crappy cut scenes and voice acting and I will be a happy man.

X3AP is the game I have spent most time on according to Steam. Egosoft gets my money as soon as their games hit Linux, no questions. I have enjoyed everything they have made. I will be drooling on my keyboard waiting for whatever they release next. Like Gobo said above. Welcome back, old friend!
WOOT!

How is X Rebirth now with latest patch and all DLC? The reviews are so mixed on Steam, it's hard to know what to think about it.
