EGOSOFT, who became pretty Linux-friendly in recent times are working on two new space simulation games! X Rebirth VR Edition will use Vulkan and they are starting to plan X4.

They say they will release X Rebirth VR Edition sometime in the first half of 2017. Hopefully by then the HTC Vive will actually have the Linux support nailed down.

From their press release:
QuoteNew graphics engine: X Rebirth VR Edition will be the first title by Egosoft to utilise our new in-house development, based on the innovative new Vulkan graphics technology.

As for X4, they aren't ready to talk about too many details, but they have taken a lot of feedback based on the release of X Rebirth, and how people expected it to be X4 (instead of the simplified game it was).

I imagine X4 will use Vulkan as well, as I doubt they would use an older engine when X Rebirth VR Edition is coming first on the new Vulkan-powered game engine.

I did reach out to the developer for comment on the Linux version of both games, but as of yet they have not replied. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: FredOHow is X Rebirth now with latest patch and all DLC? The reviews are so mixed on Steam, it's hard to know what to think about it.

For me X Rebirth had a very bad start. When it first came to Linux it did not run very well. I let it sit in my library untouched till the Home of Light DLC was released. Then I gave it a proper play through. Now it runs well and I didnt have any game breaking bugs. It is different than the other X games however it started to grow on me the more I played. It has alot of good ideas, some could use some more fleshing out. But now after playing it for over 300 hours and X3 into the 1000's of hours. I hope x4 will be a mix of the 2 games. Station building for example is way better. All in all XR, for me at least, is a solid game now. It won me over after a very bad start. Egosoft could have let it die. But they didnt. They should be proud of what XR turned out to be.

I don't care about all that VR stuff - but I'd rally appreciate X4!

I truly hate them…

I didn't finished x3 nor the expansion. I didn't started Rebirth…
Please, I moved to Linux in hope that I would be able to finish my games… stop developing games for Linux or I'll be forced to move to Haiku or BSD.

I tried X rebirth with the expansions after the patch came out. It had some weird bug that turned off force full composition pipeline when you started it, so I got horrid screen tearing. Also, there were weird limitations in how you could configure the controls, so it turned out to be unplayable for me. And there were a lot of crashes.

But I asked for and got a refund, so all is well.
