Good news today folks, as Mimimi Productions who recently released Shadow Tactics [Official Site] have stated that their previous game The Last Tinker [Official Site] was profitable on Linux (and Mac).

It's really good to see when things work out for developers, especially when they recently released another game for us which is really quite good.

On reddit, the developer did an "Ask me anything" and they had this question put to them:

Q: "Why did you release MAC and Linux ports? Are they profitable?"
Mimimi ProductionsWell, in this case: because we wanted to :) To be honest, it's still a lot of work (creating ONE build per platform can take up to 15 hours!) and even with Unity there are many platform-specific bugs. We will closely look at the numbers, but for Tinker those platforms actually have been profitable, yes.

Hopefully it's a similar story for their new game, which I will have a review up on sometime soon once I have been able to put more time into it as the publisher sent me a key. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: orochikyoKeep passing until you realize that hipsters who play on GOG will still starving of games on five years, lol.

Can do!

My kind sir, no need to worry about me. I didn't switch from Windows to Linux only to embrace Valve's DRM lock-in. Don't even have Steam account, yet, I can not find enough time to play my 100+ games from Humble Bundles (and Humble Store), GOG, itch.io and direct downloads. Something tells me in five the sutuation will not change much. ;-)

Quoting: KeyrockI might have to get The Last Tinker. If it's even half as good as Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (very different genre, I know) then I'll likely enjoy it. Plus, I could use a 3D platformer to play until Yooka-Laylee comes out.

Just a heads up - it's not a 3d platformer. It's 3d, yes, but there isn't much platforming and even when you do some jumping, it's actually automatic (you just hold the trigger while running), sometimes you have to time some moves and there isn't much more to that. I only completed ~50% of the game but if I had to describe it, it's more of an adventure + walking sim + some fighting.

Quoting: EikeWhat are you talking about?

Honestly, did you even look at that link? Needless to say I visited their official homepage. There is only Steam(tm) widget.

I'm afraid I'm right on this. Better luck next time, friend!

I wanted to ask what you are talking about a second time, as it reads "DRM free. No copy protection. No online activation." to me. Ok, got it: Windows and Mac only on Gog. That's quite strange.

PS: It would have been helpful for others if you would have passed this information in your posts.

Hm. Another one of those weird "no Linux version on GOG" cases? What's wrong with it this time? I start suspecting it's some incorrect reliance on Steam that's causing it.

I never knew The Last Tinker had a Linux release. I remember the game being released on GoG as Win/Mac.

I'll try and get in contact with them about the Linux version on GoG when I get home from my holiday.

Also strange that Blades of the Shogun is on there, but the demo isn't?? Just seems arbitrary sometimes.

Yeah, this one is especially strange. I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the demo. No response so far.

I played the Last Tinker and quite enjoyed it. It has a few rough edges and the frame rate can occasionally dip. However, it is a pretty well crafted game for a 3D platformer from a fresh developer. Very happy to have picked it up in a sale. It also worked well with the Steam Controller after a bit of setup.

I am sure it is VERY different than Shadow Tactics, though...

Sadly, it's not the unique case. GOG often don't release Linux versions of games. Whether it doesn't care or the games have some hidden agreements to release Linux versions only on Steam -- I have no information. But the tendency of increasing reliance (or dependance) on Valve's Steam service is worrysome.

Soon, some will say Vale(R) Linux(tm) [like Microsoft(R) Windows(tm)].
