Our user survey is now done automatically from your profiles every month. On the 1st of December a fresh lot was generated.
Reminder: Update your profile.
Our newest question about your primary gamepads/controllers has grown quite a bit over last month, with 231 more people answering the question compared to last month. With 502 total people answering that question now, the Steam Controller has the top share at 36% which is quite impressive.
Ubuntu and its spin-offs still remain king over all other distributions too, with them together taking a sweet 50.29%.
This is the most fun to see:
Out of 1263 people, only 2 are on 32bit.
Note: I noticed the graph numbers are getting cramped at higher levels of people, so I will be adjusting that to shorten it to "1k, 1.2K" or something like that.
It's also nice to see a healthy 68.24% of people do not dual-boot, which surprised me, but that's a damn healthy number to see.
You can view the full Linux gamer statistics at any time here.
If you have any feature suggestions, do let me know and I can add them to the list. I am focusing on a few other things before I get back to adjusting it some more.
I am still working out the best length of time to have data drop-off when it becomes stale. We do log the time and date people last updated their information, so it's easy to do when I think of a good time period for it.
I will also be working on an automatic reminder, that will appear on the site to ask you to update your details or to click if nothing has changed. That way, it will help with old data and keep it in your minds.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Quoting: liamdaweTime until drop-off to be worked out yet, it will be as easy as hitting update while changing nothing to just keep you in the system if nothing has changed :)Ah, thanks. Was worried I'd end up not getting counted for not changing my distro for two years or something. :) (Actually not changing it, not just forgetting to update it. :P )
Also, remember guys, this isn't supposed to be some hard-hitting survey, this is for-fun to give an approximation. No matter how we do it, it's not going to be 100% accurate.

Instead of making it so that the survey automatically takes information from our profiles or making it so that we have to manually enter everything, I think that a good alternative idea would be to make the surveys need one manual click so that they take the profile information. That way, people that forget to update their profiles will not be counted in the surveys, and people that want to enter in the surveys don't have to enter all the details each time.

This whole discussion made me realise I actually miss the monthly survey and survey results articles. I especially miss the one or two unique questions every month.
Here's my take on this (make with it what you will):
A week before you poll our accounts for data (however often you want to do that, say every two months), make an (semi-automated) article about it. Include a prominent link to the profile page, so I just need to click it, review my data and click save. If there's a unique question you (or someone else? There could also be an article asking for suggestions a few days prior) want to ask, include this in the article.
Then, after the data is collected, you make another article linking to the updated stats page and giving the stats for the unique question(s). Best of both worlds! \o/
Also, browsing the fresh results, it's occurred to me that I'd really like them to include percentage values. Personally, I'd even make them more prominent than the absolute values, as they are the more immediately interesting ones. Something like the box we get at the end of every bar now, with percentage above in larger font and absolute value in below in smaller font (that would also solve your numbers-are-so-big-they-look-cluttered problem somewhat) in it.

I could probably hook up an article to remind people quite easily like I do with the monthly overview. Could possibly look at doing that today even.

As for percentages, if you hover over the bar it gives you the percentages. The dropdowns below each graph also give more info.

Admittedly I haven't updated my profile to include a new gpu or two but same brand so eh...
To the 64 bit guys wondering why there is 32 bit games.. Microsoft and Intel did there best to keep software 32 bit and sadly developers parrot that train.

Oh, right, I never noticed. Ignore me, then. :-)

Quoting: boltronicsThe Steam Controllers have finally made their way down under to Australian EB Games stores, so I picked one up (profile updated). Still can't order them through the Steam client, but that's not a big problem.
It took a bit of messing around to get it working nicely, and took some more time to get used to it (I kept accidentally hitting the reverse-side bumpers). I found the Binding of Isaac to be a good game to test it out.
I can't wait to see how much will the Steam Controller cost on Brazil.

Regarding Steam controller, what happened to this project? https://gitlab.com/dennis-hamester/scd
It seems to be stalled.
