OpenMW [Official Site], the open source engine for playing Morrowind has matured a little more with the release of 0.41.0.

The open source engine needs the data files from Morrowind to play, which can be purchased from GOG. One of the few times I feel it's okay to buy a Windows game!

New features
- Implemented zero-weight boots playing light armor boot footsteps
- Implemented playing audio and visual effects for every effect in a spell
- Implemented doubling the size of spell explosions
- Implemented particle textures for spell effects
- Implemented NPCs using opponent’s weapon range to decide whether to dodge
- Implemented dodging for creatures with the “biped” flag
- Implemented drop shadow for items in the menu
- Implemented correct range for “on touch” spells
- Implemented using telekinesis with on touch spells on objects
- Implemented AI Combat: Flee
- Implemented player glow for non-portable lights added to the inventory
- OpenMW-CS: Implemented rotate and scale sub modes for instance editing mode
- OpenMW-CS: Implemented water rendering
- ESS-Importer: Implemented player control flags

While no one feature is massive, the little features coming together are what really makes the experience feel whole. I am really looking forward to seeing this get everything implemented, as it's a great engine.

It also fixes tons of bugs! See the full lowdown on this page. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I picked up Morrowind in the GOG sale a couple of days ago and have been playing with the previous version of OpenMW. It is a really neat project. Love it.

I wish it was bundled on Steam. I guess they could try to sell it/make it available on Steam as a mod.

Is it the case on GOG? I wish a client would take care of the updates, though.

If you check the Wiki there are official repos available for several major distros. I picked up Morrowind on Steam today because of OpenMW. Looking forward to playing!

No on GOG there is the good old "Morrowind" itself. But where is the problem to unpack this with innoextract and use the data with OpenMW? And why do you want another client? Just make a backup of the game-data and update OpenMW itself. There is no further need for a seperate client!

Purchased Morrowind on GOG after reading this. I am going to give it a go. This game is my fav Elder Scrolls game and I was just talking about it with a friend yesterday.

Yeah it would be cool if steam had some kind of support for 'unofficial ports'. Actually, it would be quite useful if Steam just let you download Windows games on Linux.

You can do this with steamcmd commands. Better than using WINE or a VM.

WOW, was not sure what to expect but first impressions are great, runs well and looks good. Easy to install. I only played this game on xbox when it came out. Look forward to giving it a go on my trusty Linux box! I am officially a fan!

Yes, the OpenMW team did a really great work. The game itself, and its addons Tribunal and Bloodmoon, are fully playable - I've finished all the guilds, Legion, House Hlaalu, and main quests without a single problem or bug, the only bug I encountered was also a Morrowind bug (some loot not spawning on a dead NPC iirc, fixed with the console). Bonus: 38 years old myself did a better run than 22 years old myself did on the xbox, back in the days :p. Level 70 Khaajit Assassin with all the speed/agility/sneak stuff is really, really fun to play :D

Worth noting: although not all community addons/mods are working, addons like Tamriel Rebuilt are, and many eye-candy ones too (Connary's textures for example, better heads/bodies/armors too).

I still have the original DVDs and installed them with PlayOnlinux. OpenMW found the installation the first time and runs beautifully. There are those who'll tell you that Morrowind is the best of the Elder Scrolls games. Far be it from me to argue; although Oblivion and Skyrim are good fun, Morrowind is the real, hardcore thing.
