It’s been a bit of a ride, but we now have it confirmed for sure that Civilization VI [Steam] is coming to Linux, and the release isn’t far off. We are able to confirm this with permission before the official announcement from Aspyr Media that is due later today.

Note: I will just update this post when Aspyr do their official announcement.

I cannot confirm to you the actual release date, but I can confirm if everything goes as planned that you won’t be kept waiting much longer.

Aspyr Media ported the game to Mac not too long after the Windows release, but Linux gamers had been left waiting as Aspyr stated they were still checking the "feasibility" of a port to get it up to scratch. I've seen a lot of people claim Aspyr had "abandoned" us and other interesting things, but clearly not! I did previously state it was clear that Linux was firmly in their minds, as they were repeatedly mentioning the Linux version in tweets.

I will be speaking with Aspyr Media who have agreed to answer a few of my questions, but that will be saved for another time. If you have any questions burning in your mind, feel free to let me know in the comments and I might be able to include them.

This is really fantastic news. Not only are Aspyr Media back in the game for Linux & SteamOS, but we get another insanely popular title.

Finally, as a bit of fun, try to guess what this image from Aspyr Media provided to me means (I already know):

Click to make it bigger. They seem a little familiar...

If 2017 could continue on like this, that would be grand.

Update: Aspyr have now announced it on their official blog:
Quote“This is by far the most requested game we get asked for by the Linux community,” said Elizabeth Howard, Aspyr’s Vice President of Publishing. “Besides daily inquiries asking for Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, we’ve also received 12 dozen warm chocolate chip cookies as well as squishy Linux penguins toys for the entire office. To say that we are excited to bring Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI to Linux is an understatement.”

Update 2: It is now also showing on SteamDB for those interested. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Neat, might finally get it then!

I'll buy it ;)

I would be very interested, after the game comes out for Linux (and has been available for a while) to see the percentage users / user count who are running Linux. Also a similar percentage / user count for the older game Civ5.

I'm guessing that a massively popular game, like the Civ franchise, there will be sufficient numbers of Linux users to cover the payment for the porting work (and make profit from it).

I asked for that because Feral planning to add Vulkan support for Deus Ex:MD.

Are they?; I thought they had mentioned that the first Vulkan game from them would come in the first half of 2017 but it wasnt Deus Ex, though they may revisit it later on to see.

Penguins are binary for Civ6, back turned to viewer is obviously zero.

Edit: Almost forgot:

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!

Aww here I was hoping that the front facing penguins were finished ports and the backfacing ones were in progress :D

That was my very first thought too, but then I noticed the 0 & 1 pattern. :D

Correct, they have not named any specific game that will use it. The Civ port is likely OpenGL like Mac.

I looked it up a while ago, and they were stating something about Deus Ex and about Vulkan, explicitly stated that this is not connected, but did not explicitly state that Desus Ex will not use Vulkan. No wonder this created some confusion.

So, probably, there will be no Vulkan version of Deus Ex. I'm fine with the next port using Vulkan anyway. :)

Yes,that Gol article was i mention.

We can confirm that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on Linux is using OpenGL, and we're very happy to announce that we are looking towards Vulkan implementation in the first half of next year.

This part was i m talking about.

Probably the one obvious question to them:
Which technical problems have held up the port?
Probably the one obvious question to them:

None. Originally there was going to be no Linux port at all, but since we jumped up & down they decided to reevaluate the "feasibility" of said port and it would appear they decided to do it after all.

No matter if none or not, this is the most interesting question for me as well. Can it be that Civ6 will use Vulkan on Linux and as it was first Vulkan port caused "feasibility" and delay comparing to Mac release?

Good news :)

i hope they will also give the linux treatment to Mafia 3
Tuxee Jan 9, 2017
I suppose I'm gonna buy it anyway, despite the fact that all I ever finished in Civ5 was the tutorial...
simulacrum Jan 9, 2017
Congrats on the exclusive Liam :D

This will be day 1 purchase for me. What's the best place to buy Aspyr games from so that they get ALL of the moneys now that their store is shut down?

Yes, I really want to see them bring some other games. Jade Empire would be great also, which I believe they already ported to android.
WorMzy Jan 9, 2017
Very good news, thank you, Aspyr!. :D

@liamdawe I actually do have a question that I'm very curious to get an answer on. What is Aspyr's plans going into 2017 with relation to graphics APIs. I know from their blog they've stated that they are not too fond of Metal and so I was wondering are they looking to stick with OpenGL for the time being, use Vulkan and Metal side by side for MacOS and Linux ports or use Vulkan with MoltenVK for Linux and MacOS? An in-depth answer on this would be very insightfull.

AT MY COMMAND, PREPARE THE TREAT CANNON

Seriously, this is great news! I will buy it when it's out, for sure, even if I did not originally intend to do so.

Who would be in for a common surprise? It would be nice to send them, say, a big cake, or something else.

(Just imagine the GOL crowd sending a cake to their colors, as well as the /r/LinuxGaming one, and the -more unlikely- phoronix one). Cakes, cakes everywhere =D

edit: The official announcement is out!

Update: Aspyr have now announced it themselves, link at the bottom of the article.

Can't wait to buy it!

Speaking as a community loudly is working! Maybe next one should be GTA V? Or i'm crazy? :P We should all join forces to convince the developers to keep opening their minds! :)
