It’s been a bit of a ride, but we now have it confirmed for sure that Civilization VI [Steam] is coming to Linux, and the release isn’t far off. We are able to confirm this with permission before the official announcement from Aspyr Media that is due later today.

Note: I will just update this post when Aspyr do their official announcement.

I cannot confirm to you the actual release date, but I can confirm if everything goes as planned that you won’t be kept waiting much longer.

Aspyr Media ported the game to Mac not too long after the Windows release, but Linux gamers had been left waiting as Aspyr stated they were still checking the "feasibility" of a port to get it up to scratch. I've seen a lot of people claim Aspyr had "abandoned" us and other interesting things, but clearly not! I did previously state it was clear that Linux was firmly in their minds, as they were repeatedly mentioning the Linux version in tweets.

I will be speaking with Aspyr Media who have agreed to answer a few of my questions, but that will be saved for another time. If you have any questions burning in your mind, feel free to let me know in the comments and I might be able to include them.

This is really fantastic news. Not only are Aspyr Media back in the game for Linux & SteamOS, but we get another insanely popular title.

Finally, as a bit of fun, try to guess what this image from Aspyr Media provided to me means (I already know):

Click to make it bigger. They seem a little familiar...

If 2017 could continue on like this, that would be grand.

Update: Aspyr have now announced it on their official blog:
Quote“This is by far the most requested game we get asked for by the Linux community,” said Elizabeth Howard, Aspyr’s Vice President of Publishing. “Besides daily inquiries asking for Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, we’ve also received 12 dozen warm chocolate chip cookies as well as squishy Linux penguins toys for the entire office. To say that we are excited to bring Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI to Linux is an understatement.”

Update 2: It is now also showing on SteamDB for those interested. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Woo! I'll certainly be purchasing this upon its release. I was tempted to get it in the sale but I resisted until there was confirmation it was coming to Linux. :D

Yeah they replied to my question on Facebook. They posted a few days ago with a meme / "we hear you Civ vi fans we hear you". 'My instant question was are you coding for the Linux version. Today they relied yes! :/)

Its great, Im not a fan of this game (I was never able to understand how to play civ5 lol). Hopefully many linux users will enjoy this game

Quoting: TuxeeI suppose I'm gonna buy it anyway, despite the fact that all I ever finished in Civ5 was the tutorial...
If you are not going to play it you're just throwing money to the trash.
Gobo Jan 9, 2017
Great, but still only "soon" as a release date?

Thanks Aspyr! I will definitely buy the game as soon as it becomes available.

What will the state of updates, DLC, and crossplay be? We will probably be behind windows any time Firaxis puts out new content, but will we be linked to the same version schedule as the Mac version? It would be cool to always be able to play with them.

Also, ask about what it was that held up the port. I'd be interested to know. I'm hoping they always wanted to do the Linux version but just didn't have the engineering resources they wanted, so they put most of their engineers on the Mac version (to try to a simultaneous mac/windows release) and always were planning to do the linux version later.

That's great news! I will definitely get this one as soon as it comes out.

Thanks a lot to our community and Liam for motivating Aspyr! And thanks to Aspyr of course for doing the port!

That just made my year! ;)

For the record, a Linux entry for Sid Meier's Civilization VI appeared on the SteamDB. Hurray!

Edit: Bad formulation.

I hope performance is close to its windows counterpart, its acceptable on Mac but certainly not great. :(

Now I just need to know the release date so I can finish filling out my time-off request for work.

I'm kidding of course - I'll just call in that day.

They are on Amazon for $2...which is the crazy part...some Linux fan sent 1 for every person in the company (75). $150 just to show support for Civ VI Linux 0.0

Finally!

The real question is, is Civ VI worth buying in its current state? Or is it like the last two iterations that really weren't worth playing until after at least the first expansion?

I think that is what is making VI the biggest launch in franchise history. The game starts with much of what V had with all the DLC and expansions added in...and we all know Civ keeps getting better :D

Shared the link for this page onto the Ubuntu Forums Gaming and Leisure thread, on a thread on which the chances for CIV 6 for Linux were held in doubt.

Great news, I will buy it as soon as possible.

Even though I don't have time right now, I will buy it the minute it comes out! :)
