It’s been a bit of a ride, but we now have it confirmed for sure that Civilization VI [Steam] is coming to Linux, and the release isn’t far off. We are able to confirm this with permission before the official announcement from Aspyr Media that is due later today.

Note: I will just update this post when Aspyr do their official announcement.

I cannot confirm to you the actual release date, but I can confirm if everything goes as planned that you won’t be kept waiting much longer.

Aspyr Media ported the game to Mac not too long after the Windows release, but Linux gamers had been left waiting as Aspyr stated they were still checking the "feasibility" of a port to get it up to scratch. I've seen a lot of people claim Aspyr had "abandoned" us and other interesting things, but clearly not! I did previously state it was clear that Linux was firmly in their minds, as they were repeatedly mentioning the Linux version in tweets.

I will be speaking with Aspyr Media who have agreed to answer a few of my questions, but that will be saved for another time. If you have any questions burning in your mind, feel free to let me know in the comments and I might be able to include them.

This is really fantastic news. Not only are Aspyr Media back in the game for Linux & SteamOS, but we get another insanely popular title.

Finally, as a bit of fun, try to guess what this image from Aspyr Media provided to me means (I already know):

Click to make it bigger. They seem a little familiar...

If 2017 could continue on like this, that would be grand.

Update: Aspyr have now announced it on their official blog:
Quote“This is by far the most requested game we get asked for by the Linux community,” said Elizabeth Howard, Aspyr’s Vice President of Publishing. “Besides daily inquiries asking for Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, we’ve also received 12 dozen warm chocolate chip cookies as well as squishy Linux penguins toys for the entire office. To say that we are excited to bring Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI to Linux is an understatement.”

Update 2: It is now also showing on SteamDB for those interested. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Excellent news. Hopefully the release day is just a few turns away.

The real question is, is Civ VI worth buying in its current state? Or is it like the last two iterations that really weren't worth playing until after at least the first expansion?

I think that is what is making VI the biggest launch in franchise history. The game starts with much of what V had with all the DLC and expansions added in...and we all know Civ keeps getting better :D

Thanks for answering this, it's exactly what I was wondering.. if we'd get a full game this time.

Though, I'm going to guess this one doesn't include the voice of Leonard Nimoy (I think that was IV). Been a fan of the Civilization games since the first one, though I have to say the second is still my favorite, at least it's the one I've played the most. Granted by the time the third came out I was a working fool and didn't have time to spend playing it, I don't think it was until IV that I even completed a full game, and I still haven't done so in V. I'll definitely buy this though if it includes all the stuff that V should have, but was added to later.

Amazing news, thanks Aspyr! Obviously going to buy it.
I too am interested in what the problem was with the Linux version.

So, just to add to this... how many tiny penguins + cookies + cake will it take to get a port from Bethesda? :)

I have way too many big, time consuming strategy games at the moment, between Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, Hearts of Iron IV, Stellaris, Civilization V, Total Warhammer, Empire: Total War... do I really need to add another to the pile?

Great news! This is of course instant buy for me as soon as Linux version is available. For any other game I usually wait until it is in sale, but not with Civ.

yes! thanks Aspyr, I figured it was on the soon TM list :)

I thanked everyone for participating and closed down my petition. I look forward to getting the game soon. :D

Bought it for Mac (so that Aspyr gets paid). And this morning it appeared in my Steam Linux list. Sooo... looks like the game is damn soon to be released !!!

So anyone knows what actually happened?

This is just speculation but I think it maybe had something to do with overall game sales. We know that Windows and MacOS was originally planned with the release last year in October. Perhaps the game first needed to achieve a milestone in sales overall before they could or would port to Linux. Just something about the way they wrote the first line in the announcement: Aspyr Media announced today that Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, the next entry in the award-winning Civilization® franchise, which has sold-in over 37 million units, is coming soon to Linux!

This is all Civs together, not the latest one, right?

Likely, yes.

That is correct yes, this article on VG247 also confirms this saying that in February last year the sales stood at 33 Million. So with it now being 37 million I suppose you could say that Civ 6 sales account for the largest part of the additional 4 million sales to date. www.vg247.com/2016/02/19/the-civilization-series-has-sold-33-million-copies-since-it-debuted-in-1991/

Probably the one obvious question to them:
Which technical problems have held up the port?

None. Originally there was going to be no Linux port at all, but since we jumped up & down they decided to reevaluate the "feasibility" of said port and it would appear they decided to do it after all.

When did they say there wouldn't be a port? The only info I managed to find is that they were evaluating the viability which is business 101 anyway and nobody should be surprised by that.

They originally announced the Mac port and that was it. Then only after Linux users started begging they said they were going to do a feasibility analysis. The Linux version was not intended from the beginning.

This is a simple recount of how it happened - not intended to be hostile, and no need to be defensive about it.

$150 just to show support for Civ VI Linux 0.0

Is there any chance of bringing the Linux version of KOTOR 2 to GOG & convincing 2K to release CIV V & VI there (with their Linux versions ofc)? If they came to GOG they'd be instabuys for me at least, plus I'd likely buy multiple gift keys for them as gifts for friends & prizes for the various Linux giveaways I run there every so often.
