A GOL follower sent word that Alienware are giving out limited keys to a Disgaea 2 [Steam] demo test. The good news is I got one and it seems the demo already runs on Linux.

I assume the Linux/SteamOS beta came and went, as I didn't get a key to it, so it's pleasing I can at least test this out.

At the time of writing 4250 keys are left, so act fast.

Note: You need to sign up to get one.

Don't worry if you miss out, as the game will be officially available on January 30th.

Head here to grab it.

I can confirm it runs and it works properly with my two monitor setup. It has the correct monitor picked with the correct resolution. It minimizes correctly and can be pulled back up too.

The graphics haven't aged well at all and it looks pretty bad:

Check on the Steam screenshots, this is not a bug, the graphics really are just that poorly done. They haven't done any adjustments to smooth it out, so you can still see those tile lines.

I also spotted a spelling error:

"powrful" huh

Everything else I tested seemed to work fine, including the Steam Overlay.

It's great that we will see a day-1 release, even if it doesn't seem like it will be my cup. I don't mind retro or low-resolution graphics at all, but it just looks bad.

It officially launches on 30 January, so I was quite pleasantly surprised to find out that it runs on Linux already. Didn't even have to select any beta or anything. <3

FYI, you can turn off the character filter effect in the "PC Settings" options menu. I think it makes it more bearable to look at. I like that they made HD menus and character portraits (and included the option to use the old ones). I just wish the rest of the assets got redone as well. Nonetheless, it's a good port imho.

Snagged a demo key, can't wait to try it out. The graphics may have aged poorly, but the Disgaea series are some of the finest sRPGs out there.

If it comes out okay, I'll snag it as soon as possible. I played the first one on PSP and began the second one but never finished it. The first game, however, gives me pause as it was released in a horrible state. Even if the demo and these keys worked as intended, I won't believe most AAA developers these days (or whatever you would class NIS America these days).

It runs really well, though I did have some issues with introduction video slowing down. Nothing major though, as after it the main game runs fine. Also, the videos are available as .ogm files in the game folder, so you can rewatch them :)

I played a demo for over an hour, never played Disgaea before as I never had a console, so it was my first experience with the series - much reading if you want to read all the tutorials, but at least they experience all the mechanics at the funny way :P. If you like turn-based strategy games or a game of chess, I could readily recommend to try the game, especially as it have the demo - it also have a specific humor, too :)

The graphics are not remastered, but the menu and the opening video look really sharp, which is nice. Overall, it was really nice to see a console game coming to Linux. It seems it's their first Mac/Linux game on Steam so far. Too bad the original one doesn't have a port, as it would be nice to play it first, but if they decide to do it in the future, I will definitely buy it sooner or later :P

Thanks for telling Liam then. :)

No more keys left BTW.

EDIT: Just launched the demo and I already found proof that Disgaea was always meant to be on linux:

I got the sound problems in the video as well. The video file itself plays fine using external players, so it must be a bug with the game.

A demo? 21 hours? I'm almost afraid to give it a proper go myself.

Well the demo itself is only the start of the game, BUT at the end of the demo's contents, they say you can import your demo savegame into the full game.

So I'm grinding levels and some of my weapons as well.
