Good news for Linux fans, as multiple big websites showing off statistics have shown Linux is on the rise!

Note: These should always been taken with a pinch of salt. Even with that said, multiple places are reporting a rise in Linux market-share, which is a good sign when put together.

Netmarketshare statistics reports that Linux has seen a marketshare of over 2% for 7 months in a row now. This means that Linux in the space of a year jumped 0.55%. This may not sound like much, but that can represent a lot of people. This is pretty damn good, since for years we were stuck well below 2%.

The site w3counter has seen something similar, as Linux didn't even register in their top 10 operating systems in September 2016, but suddenly in October 2016 it number 10 with 2.72%, then in November 2016 3.14% and December 2016 3.80%.

The case with w3schools stats is a bit different, but still trending towards something good for us. In 2003 Linux was just hitting 2.6%, but fast forward to 2016 and Linux is hitting around 5.6%.

Finally, pornhub (NSFW obviously), a popular porn website has seen a 14% increase in traffic from Linux in the space of a year.

Looks like things are going pretty nicely for Linux in general right now. This is good news for us, as more people using Linux means more people are likely to look into gaming on Linux too.

Keep it going Linux users and gamers! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Obviously, the Pornhub numbers are the hardest evidence yet for Linux growth. Hopefully Linux usage keeps thrusting forward and we reach a big climax in the future.

I'm trying to convert many persons to Linux.Which i'm just a single person but so many others like me is out there.

Even we have a forum site to help Linux new-comers to solve their problems and so many gaming sections of course.

Which is deditaced to Steam,GOG.COM and other possibilities like PlayOnLinux,Wine,OpenMW etc.

The only suffering is some people with good hardware just keeps asking AAA games on Linux to us,mostly BattleField 1,Gta5,sadly League of Legends(Dota2 is way better than that) and Witcher3.

Besides of that,so many are happy with Cs:Go,Rocket League,Mount&Blade Warband(with vanilla version,expansion packs are keeps crashing),Darkest Dungeon,CiV5,Cities:Skylines.

We need AAA titles badly at this point.

+1.2% for Linux ;)

Wow, is Linux really gaining market share? Except for gamers (according to the steam hardware survey) as it seems :->

I am really starting to wonder if Valve is sandbagging for some weird reason.

So . . . to point out the simple and obvious, among all those sites the lowest figure is over 2%.
We have 2.2%, 3.8%, 5.6%, 3%. All in all, the 1% figure can maybe be put to bed.
So either there's something odd about Steam statistics, or Linux is used more for everything else but gaming.

Or the Steam HW Survey is shit.

Yeah, agreed. The Steam HW survey is not only inaccurate but in my honest opinion geared towards Windows. The reason I say this is basically anyone who dual boots will show up as Windows not Linux, unless you go out of your way, way out of your way to rectify this which most people don't do. Other than that, if you use Windows in any place in your life and access Steam there you're a Windows user not a Linux user. So, if you buy your games on a Win PC at work, or a work laptop using Windows or any other similar issue. You're counted as a Windows user and that game sales is a Windows sale not Linux.

Valve really needs to fix that survey.

Wait a minute.... Are you telling me that there is porn on the internet?!
minj Jan 7, 2017
Disregard the w3schools stats since IT crowd is not a representative sampling population. The pornhub number is revealing though

I'd love to see Facebook's and Google's stats, probably the most accurate
