Croteam being awesome as usual, as promised Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter is now officially on Linux.
Announced today in this update, but they note it will not have the SteamOS icon, since it's all still in Beta. Anyone who owns it, will be able to access the Linux version.
This is the type of game that could easily get me into loving VR. A first person shooter in VR that's well supported and it has multiplayer. That just sounds damn fun.
About the game
Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter is a frantic arcade action FPS, featuring singleplayer and co-op campaign modes, various multiplayer modes, all presented in glorious VR with Croteam's new Serious Warp movement system.
See what Sam sees, feel what Sam feels, and find out what it's like to BE the legend!
If you have a Vive and you're brave enough to be testing all this, please do let us know how it runs as I don't own a Vive due to the cost.

Dang, The one I picked up for Vive isn't the linux one. Guess I'll buy "The First Encounter" shortly!

Just checked local stores, and Vive goes for about €1000. Not an insane price, compared to for example a nice laptop. Although I would have very hard time justifying such a purchase to myself right now. But I sure do want to try it, and totally excited about Linux support.

Go Croteam. But, seriously, .... only 1% of people are wasting money on VR kit so far. And I for one... I work in a Gaming Company and VR is s _ _ t. You wouldn't see me wasting money on VR gear for 2+ years. It is good to be "ahead of the game" and release stuff into this space before other people do, but "right now" it isn't a money-spinner.

VR is "salt" to spice up our gaming fun, "sent" to us by the gaming gods? I've just played an hour of Serious Sam VR: TFE with my Vive on Linux. It's fun. I disagree with your generalized statement that VR is "shit". Smartphone VR is not the same thing as Vive VR. There are people who've never had any proper, modern (room scale) VR experiences, and still feel they know enough to say that VR isn't interesting (yet). It's all subjective, of course, but at the very least a statement that VR in general is shit isn't very nuanced.

This is very true. I have both the GearVR and a Vive, and there simply is no comparison. I wish they'd port Dead Halls to the Vive, it would be amazing in room scale.
There was an article quite a while back that went into details (this was written even before the VR of the 90s if I recall) of what 'True' VR is. It's more along the lines of the Matrix or Lawnmower Man. Being able to interact with the virtual reality is a key feature, and interact in a way that is beyond a simple game pad. The Vive is the closest thing we have to that right now (and will definitely hit that point once we have full body tracking.)
I can't help but think the next big VR technology push though is going to have something to do with sex toys...

How do you move around and shoot things? Do you use mouse and keyboard still, or those little hand held dongle things?

The dongle things. You push the 'menu/pause' button to bring up your weapon list (it goes slow motion while doing this) and you move with a teleport with the touch pad, or you can kind of hop short distances. I think I may have mine set up weird, because there should be ways to smoothly run and jump, but I didn't see the option for that.
Game is a blast, can't wait to try it under Linux.

I think the teleporting is how it is supposed to be! People get nausea from "being" a character moving aroung smoothly while their body is sending signals that it's just sitting/standing around. That's one (the major?) problem with VR.

These kind of VR is already existing in Japan.

Ok wait up, back up, whoha! Vive is working on Linux NOW? How's the experience, technically? How is it compared to Vive on Windows?
The hardware requirements, are they the same for Linux too?
Are there other VR-games that runs on Linux too, to choose from on Steam?
Essentially what I ask is, can I go buy a Vive NOW and enjoy it in full on my Linux machine?

Will there be a non-VR version?

Please Croteam hurry up with "SSVR: The Last Hope" – the game that I mixed up with "SSVR: The First Encounter" when I promised to instantly buy SSVR when it becomes available on Linux. I can't stand trackpad locomotion at all (takes ~1 second and I'm feeling dizzy or worse) and I don't think this game plays very well with teleport or dash locomotion, so it's "SSVR: The Last Hope" only for me.

I will talk about my experience with vive on linux, its really fustrating. At release of beta it was totally bugged, tutorial doesn't start and destinations was hanging at start. After the patch tutorial work, but with really low quality and high latency that made me feel sick. I didn't tried destinations nor serious sam VR, i will try this afternoon. But atm it's just unplayable, atlease for me. I have no idea how work to other users. I didn't had time to test diferent configurations, maybe i should.
Edit: Ops i forget mention that i get stuck on tutorial because the trackpad doesnt work while i have no issues on windows.
Btw, my specs are i7-6700k and gtx 970.

Look: Opinion on VR is most likely very divided. People like me have given VR a decent try (Vive, Oculus, Pixel, PS4 Pro) on current consumer devices. I'm not talking about next-gen VR equipment - I'm talking about current-gen being s _ _ t.
If you think it is a fantastic, mind-blowing experience which completely changes the gaming landscape - Good for you. What games are you playing by the way? Do you rate any of those games better than traditional 'screen' games?
For me, not so much. It's definitely fun to try out. Certain games do feel much better in a VR environment.
I'm not a big fan of 3D cinema either. If a film is out on 2D and 3D, most of the time I find it more pleasant as a 2D experience, and quite often 3D spoils the viewing pleasure (because it hasn't been done well enough).
I would highly recommend trying out someone else's equipment, or trying a VR system at a trade show, friend's home, specialist store, etc - and evaluating VR for yourself. I've already done that and I don't particularly like it. It is quite expensive to get into, and if you find you don't like it, money down the toilet.

Thanks alot for that report, Bubexel. I really hope others with the gear can keep me posted too - I'm very very eager to hear the progress on this work.
Personally I'm aiming for a purchase when the SteamVR package runs well on Linux (as it will eventually, that I am sure of) and when there are at least a handful interesting games to play.
But in my estimation that may already be this summer. Let's hope for a rainy cold summer season this year :)
But yeah, hope to hear from more Vive owners about their experience! Eventually in a DM if you don't want to spam the comments here.

Unfortunately, the GTX 970 is quite close to the low end of VR-compatible graphics cards.
Ideally you'd want GTX 1070 or better. (We use GTX 1080 with our Vive, Oculus at work).

My brother gave me his GTX 780 (same level as GTX 970 because he wanted to buy a new card for VR...
