Another good game project that could use some help in the way of your votes: The Dark Mod [Official Site]. The developers are wanting to get the game onto Steam through Greenlight.

I tried it a few times and it is really well done, so it would be a big boost for it to get onto Steam. You can download it right now from here (or from the AUR on Arch), so you don't actually need Steam.

About the game
In it you play a hooded figure slinking through the shadows of a gothic, murky, candle-lit, steampunk world, hunting priceless valuables while avoiding the swords and arrows of those hired to stop you. Each mission is an interactive short story, where you play the main character, with tools such as rope arrows, gas and flash mines, lockpicks etc. You break into buildings, loot places, solve mysteries or simply try to get out alive. If people want to try out this game and want a really good experience immediately, get the Requiem custom mission and enjoy. It's quite an amazing mission with some length to it, along with some very Thief-like twists and turns. Basically contains the best The Dark Mod has to offer.

Also, I will shamelessly plug my playthrough of that mission in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGlqd_QVO2Q

That gives me an idea... Couldn't OpenMW be put on steam as a mod (ie, requiring Morrowind's game files)?
(Of course, that wouldn't want if you only wanted the engine, but Steam is mainly for games, not engines)

With these various 'currently free' games coming to Steam, e.g. The Dark Mod, QueToo, maybe others - I hope two things continue:

1) The game stays a free game.
2) The game is still available as a non-Steam DRM-free installer package (for people who prefer not to use Steam).

Fair enough if you monetise a brand new game, but taking an already-free game and then converting it to a paid-for game is "not on"

The Dark Mod is really excellent, will vote when I get home.

Developer states that the reason for a Steam release is that the maintaining download servers is becoming harder and harder as time goes on.

Hi Liam,
First time caller, long time listener! :)

I just noticed that this is a mod for Doom III. Does it require a license to Doom III, or is it stand alone?

This used to be a mod for Doom III but now it's completely standalone since the id Tech 4 engine is open source.

I'm not actually convinced I agree. The sheer amount of work that's been put into this, I think it's great that the devs can make a decision like this. The only time moving to a paid model feels off is when another dev tries to take free content and monetise it. Or when one dev from a large team tries to take credit for a large project team's previous efforts.

Nothing, at all, in this life, is free. Even altruistic endevours like this have to be hosted on servers, bandwidth and websites paid for. Someone is incurring all that cost and they absolutley have a right to ask for money in those circumstances.

These guys are doing it a great way though - much like Tales of Maj'Eyal, a paid product you can buy for convenience and extras, and the free games hosted for as long as they can using the existing website.

Best of luck to them. I'd love to play this more, so this move is very welcome.

Honestly, I wouldn't be against paying for a good game. I could care less for the price, if the product is free as in freedom.
For example, they could sell it on Steam (and leave it DRM-free, by the way), and still offer a torrent or an alternative way to freely download it. Or a paid DLC to pay off their efforts a bit.

Of course, I say that at a moment I can afford paying for games, which hasn't always been the case. I appreciate free games, and I did so even more as a child :)
