The Early Access release of Heavy Gear Assault [Steam] came and went and they had quite a number of issues with the Linux version, but they have made serious attempts to fix it.

They emailed in and spoke to me on Twitter and they confirmed Linux is a "high priority now". They also said in a public update "Supporting Linux and the Linux community is one of our top concerns.".

This makes me really like them, as they have been really open and great at communication all the way through development. They've since done a few patches which has really improved Linux support in Heavy Gear Assault!

I can confirm everything now works as expected for me and all the previous bugs I saw are completely gone, so be sure to take a look at it, as it looks like they've done a good job polishing it up.

Just something to note: The game is online-only right now and the player base is small, but hopefully that will increase as the game becomes more accessible. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Heavy Gear Assault? Wasn't that that old old old battletech game? Or am I just confus?

Absolutely not. Its actually a different mech franchise. There were a bunch of Heavy Gear games in the 90s on the PC. It was actually one of battletech's main competitors. Infact I'd say it still is.

Been following these guys for awhile and they've been doing a great job as a small team to compete with the big mech games out there. This dev team actually developed the MechWarrior mechpaks but M$ wouldn't let them release a build for Linux =\ I am really excited by their focus on Linux with Heavy Gear and I think its great to finally have a mech game I can play! I also like the old school feel to the game. Its a nice little mech shooter right now.

Been waiting on this game, would love to fire it up and test some stuff. Alas there is no version to do so yet. Looks like a wonderful game though. What do the frame rates look like?

It seems to be available on Steam right now? What do you mean, "no version to do so"?

I don't do EA these days, but their EA description talks about a release in December this year, so that's Christmas sorted! I loved the original MechWarrior series and cried a bitter tear of regret when I saw that Microsoft had picked up the IP. Gutted. So this is a must-buy for me. Looking forward to it!

I will give it some time tonight. I couldn't play it because the mouse would read about 1 cm above the cursor.

sadly the game has next to no players..

This is multiplayer, so not my thing. I do have fond memories of playing the Loki port of Heavy Gear 2 on Linux back in the early 2000s though.

There is no linux version available to play right at the moment unfortunately.

I'll give it another try tonight - the last time I tried (two-three weeks ago maybe?) it did render all skyboxes white.

Wow I feel stupid. I was thinking dark horizons mechanized corps. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Yes - I report quite a lot of issues to developers, and up until now all have been solved with updates / beta-branches :).

I need to give this a little more testing time, though. have not yet had the chance to test this properly - or to play with graphical settings and such.

Is there a special process developers have to undergo to get their games servers to appear in the steam clients server browser?

I think a lot of these indie games that struggle to get a decent multiplayer base going would really benefit from that since people could check servers without having to start the game up all the time to see when people are playing.
