The rather good MMO 'Albion Online' finally has a proper release date! I am looking forward to creating a guild with some Linux gamers.

On July 17th the game will officially leave Beta, so there will be no more progress wipes. That's what I have been holding out for to put serious time into it.

They will also get rid of the "founders packs" to buy into the game, which will be replaced with starter packs. So your last chance to get the special in-game items for supporting their development is coming up soon.

On March 13th the next big Beta update "Galahad" will land in the game, which will bring an entire new world layout, a brand new interface, a complete rework of PvE and much more. See more details on that update here.

It's a pity that Albion Online is not on Steam and probably won't be in the near future. :-/

How free is the camera in this game?

Can you zoom closer to the character or is the camera locked on one distance? It's a bit unclear to me cause some game videos show your character close up, but gameplay videos seem to all be stuck at one specific distance with an isometric perspective.

We're Greenlit since a long time and at least the plan is that we eventually will!

You can zoom in/out a little (changes distance and camera angle to some degree) but that's it. You cannot move the camera freely.
Even if you could, you wouldn't see any other players / mobs since the client only gets updates in a close proximity for anti-cheat and performance reasons.

Looking forward to the release. I have bought a founder pack a long time ago but have only played like 1 hour so far. I hope PVE will be strenghthened further since I preferred that aspect in other mmo (wow).

Yeah a limit to moving camera *away* I can fully understand. I'm more interested in zooming IN and see your character from the side (and closer). It's a bit meaningless to stash your character with awesome gear and outfits without having the chance to check out the new bling. Also, to enjoy battle animations, close surroundings and the likes a bit better. Just get a better view than the distant birds view.

So it's not for overviews I want camera control - it's to see better what goes on close hand. :)

Liam, shouldn't the title read "The Linux-supporting MMO..." ? :-)

Same here. I was initially completely uninterested in Albion because of the focus on PVP, but since more PVE elements seem to be getting added my interest has risen a bit.

QuoteSo your last chance to get the special in-game items for supporting their development is coming up soon.

My understanding was that these items were lootable, so if you want them you can just gank someone who paid for them, is this changing?

Yes, if someone carries his/her founders gear in the Outlands and gets killed someone else can loot it. In contrast, on the Royal Continent looting is limited. I'd expect most owners will keep their founders gear in a safe place. But you can always make a sell order at a market place and offer a lot of silver/gold for any specific item to tempt owners to sell it.
