As a big fan of the older Halo games myself, Installation 01 [Official Site] sounds like it could be pretty interesting. It also plans full Linux support due to using the Unity game engine.
Check out some recent gameplay:
They claim to be fully compliant with Microsoft's licenses and all their assets are made from scratch.
I would actually love to be able to play this, so I really hope Microsoft don't suddenly get militant with them. With all their assets being custom made, hopefully that will never be an issue.
I spent many, many hours playing various Halo games over the years as the gameplay really is damn fun.

Wow, those guys are in a dangerous spot. Halo is a cash cow for MS and they will send lawyers to trow briefcases at then, if they're feeling that the Halo name are in danger. Especially if the game became really popular and fans start to make comparisons making MS games look bad.
I know that Nintendo would have sent letters to then already if this was a Mario themed game.
As for this game, I'm not a Halo fan but this look really nice, especially if they could introduce a FOV slider in the settings, because the main reason I disliked Halo was the "sniper FOV" of the original Xbox games.

Very nice to see such a project. I had heard about one using the source engine, but this one looks promising.
I would be willing to help, if that's not a completely closed project.
I still remember my Halo CD key! The Halo universe isn't amazing, by today's standards, but it was one of the most coherent and realistic ones at the time. And the gameplay was pretty revolutionary as well.

Something Bungie founded that Microsoft shamelessly bought during development hell
Fixed for you ;)

It is, however, a very slow moving project. Installation 01 was announced with plans for Linux support two years ago.

Haha, I was thinking something along the same lines... back when not only did Halo release on PC's, but some of those PC's running it were running Mac OS even when Mac OS was quite unpopular. Now people in general think of Microsoft when they think "Halo". Of course, some of us think of Bungie and Halo's predecessors, the Marathon series :)

"it will be released on windows, mac and other PC platforms". Why on earth did they pronounce "Linux" like that?

Well, to be fair, the game was first developped under Apple's umbrella. You can find youtube videos of the first announcement... By Steve Jobs (first link in a quick search, I didn't check if it was the best one). Dear irony...
"it will be released on windows, mac and other PC platforms". Why on earth did they pronounce "Linux" like that?Technically, Mac is a PC "platform" nowadays. So are other consoles :P
I have so many questions about this project, but I think I'll contact the devs directly.

Wow. I'm impressed. It's one thing to make models look similar, but the physics and animation are very similar too! I would really like to play it someday.

These guys actually allow new people in, so long as they are able to commit the time and effort. All you have to do is show them your work, and ask to help. If they like your work, they'll let you in.

Bungie was a studio that released only original Apple Macintosh games up to Myth, which was their first PC/Mac game, and Myth II which was ported to Linux by Loki Software back in the day. The studio founder, Alex Seropian, left after the Microsoft buyout. I don't remember if he even completed the development of the first Halo, but he surely has nothing to do with the followups.
