As expected, although not in the same day I wrote about Aspyr teasing it, the 'Australian Summer' update for Civilization VI [Steam] is now live on Linux.

So the game is now up to date along with all DLC being available for Linux gamers.

Here are some highlights from the patch:
- Start position and map generation has been tuned
- Updated ice generation to allow more for circumnavigation
- Players can now build obsolete units if they do not have access to the strategic resource required by the upgrade unit
- Tech Tree balance and adjusted prerequisites
- Updated Viking scenario to 60 turns
- Steam Workshop support

If you do pick up the 'Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack' DLC that now supports Linux, be sure to come back and tell us your thoughts. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

So when they say soon, they really do mean SOON! Nice.

Any news about performance fix? I think that is more important than DLC
Kimyrielle Mar 14, 2017
I am utterly not interested in the DLC, but the "free" patch is nice and welcome.

As a side note, I really wonder if really EVERY country on the planet gets added before Canada does. I know, I know. We're America's hat. But still!

More to the point, is this a real update?

Can you explain?

Hi,

I haven't bought CIV6 yet and would appreciate some advise
from my fellow Linux gamers:
Is CIV6 worth it compared to CIV5? Do the new features justify
the price tag? What do you think, is it worth a buy?

Best regards,

lagh

lagh: No, not right now. Not yet. It is probably much better to wait for decent expansions. Game currently suffer from serious balance issues, even dumber AI, kind of dumb design of several victory conditions (namely religion is quite weak) and it kind of lack content, some technologies/units/tech tree are overstretched in certain areas.

That was timely! Good stuff! :D

Canada is way too nice to be a war monger : ) I went to Victoria recently and would move there today if it wasn't so cold in the winter..

Agreed, as I mentioned in a post re: performance on ARK (or maybe I took it out) anyways, they should focus on getting the OpenGL version at least to a 9/10 mark before saying that they're going to work on Vulkan.

It's almost like the silly comments you see sometimes that make you think that people believe that bad/slow game + vulkan = fast game. There are always trade offs and I always hope that developers recognize they have priorities that come before other editions/DLC.

Maybe if OpenGL is at it's limits and Vulkan makes sense.. but I don't think, in my example, ARK is at that point., and looking around it seems as though people have said that for a while. Eventually computers will catch up, but not anytime soon. E.g. unoptimized BASIC would still be fast on today's machines.

Eh, they could call the DLC pack "Canadian Winter" and make it a "Seasons!!!" pack together with the Australian summer thingie. We got at least as much snow as Australia got sun. Maybe more. And actually...Victoria is pretty warm. By our standards. I live close by. :D

Huh. I'm a Vancouver man myself. And really, Victoria? Cold in winter? Half the US is colder than Victoria in winter; I think half the time they never get a single snowfall. Or, like, maybe one or two, that stick for a day and then there's rain the next day. Even Vancouver doesn't get much, except this year which has been a total Global Weirding bizarrefest.

This winter was horrible. I actually had to shovel snow. Can you imagine! That...didn't happen in the past 10 years or so.
And I have no idea why I am mentioning that, but the US East Coast is getting hit by a blizzard while I am writing this. But WE are the frozen wasteland! Yeah, right!!! No snow here. Just rain! As is proper! *flails arms*

But...honestly? They could put us in with our special unit being a hockey team and our cultural focus being a Double Double. If they would just put us in the game. Once.

But I think I rather see another serious winter before THAT will happen. *sob*

I only have about 23h playing time, but in my opinion Civ 6 is great. Some things changed dramatically (e.g. districts, civics and builders), but I really like the changes. If you are a real Civ 5 geek, I'm not 100% sure, if you should upgrade right now. At the moment, Civ 5 is more complex and balanced. If you can get your hands on a cheap license (I paid about 20€ due to a great offer): Get it! It certainly is worth the full price, but in the current situation not a must-buy (especially not until cross-platform multiplayer is released).

I was highly critical of the "city sprawl" mechanics before Civ VI launched, but I must admit it works much better than I thought it would. One thing about it I still don't like is the tons of requirements and restrictions for building districts. Some of these restrictions are super-arbitrary and severely limit or at least elbow you into a certain way to build cities. But generally, the new city building is certainly more interesting than its predecessors.

I also still hate the childish cartoon art, but that's of course a matter of taste.

That being said, Civ V WITH the DLCs is also a great game. If budget is an issue, get whatever game is cheaper.

Update didn't do a thing for the performance. It's just as bad as before.

[...]

I'm a bit further south (TX) where we've had the warmest winter on record (12 days above 80F, and only around 11 days of freezing, no snow that I can remember this winter). Compared to Victoria, avg. high during the winter <= 47F vs. our avg. high <= 63F. From what you said and looking around, it looks much milder than most of Canada and much milder than many parts of the US. I'm sure I could buy a coat and make the move :) I definitely wouldn't miss summer stretches of >= 100F, which can be weeks on end.

They could put us in with our special unit being a hockey team
Would they pronounce it the correct way, or the funny way? I always get a laugh out of how CA says 'hockey' :P

If they would just put us in the game. Once.
I agree. There is more than enough historical events and culture to include Canada - it should be in the game. Who knows what the reason for excluding it is...

Is city building more fun in Civ 6 than Civ 5?
felicis Mar 16, 2017
I've been getting massive slowdowns after this update went live. It happens randomly, sometimes right when the game starts and sometimes after 20/30 minutes playing. First the FPS falls to single digits and after a while the game freezes completely and I have to reboot. I built this computer a few months ago and all other games work fine (including Civ6 before this update), so it's clearly not a hardware problem. Just curious if it's happening to anybody else.
