STRAFE [Steam, Kickstarter] looks fantastic as an FPS and a throwback to some retro shooters, but sadly it has seen a delay. I reached out to the publisher Devolver Digital to ask about the Linux release as it wasn't mentioned in the announcement.

When asking if "PC" meant Windows in the recent announcement, or if they were including Linux in that and here's the reply:
QuoteSTRAFE will hit PC via Windows and Mac, at least first.
I did additionally ask if there was any release date now set for the Linux version:
QuoteNot at the moment, no.
STRAFE was funded on Kickstarter with $207,847 pledged to make this retro throwback FPS happen. I'm really excited to play it, so hopefully we don't get let down.

You're right ,it is not entertaining but that is a fact and one of logical reasons about this lack of some games and cancelled ports or Linux version promised but cancelled Kickstarter games.I'm serious, it's very entertaining. People like you only look at the percentage in the end and never wonder about the total user base and then you go on massive crusades telling everyone how bad (you think) the situation is.
Also, those failed Kickstarters have existed for a while now and I would attribute those to blatant greed and incompetence rather than current Linux percentage in the hardware survey. And, if you want, you can check our wiki page for ports that have gone MIA or been cancelled. It's a fairly short list.
Meanwhile, in the real life, we are getting more ports than we have ever before and a number of those are major titles. And if we talk about games that are actually being played right now, we have a fair chunk of the top games. Last I checked it was actually a vast majority. At the same time we are seeing impressive improvements to our driver stack and, at least in terms of GOL, we are constantly seeing more traffic and our social media platforms keep growing in terms of member/follower numbers.
Don't think for a second that Linux is in worse shape than it was a year or two ago.

C'mon, everyone knows you're not a real gamer unless you play Nethack, which you compiled yourself, on a full screen terminal in Gentoo (sysvinit thanks very much) using a keyboard once brushed by the beard of Stallman.
Anyone who disagrees with me is clearly the type of person who values graphics over gameplay.

Question: What does Strafe add to Quake/Unreal formula? Aside from weapon customization, pretty much nothing. They picked the esthetic that I despise the most; voxel art... Here comes from John Romero; "if you make a game with Quake engine but it could be easily made with Doom engine, you failed". It is 2017, they use the most recent version of Unity engine but the game looks like Quake 1 and plays like Unreal Tournament (1999). Sorry, they need to add more than cheesy 90's trailers to convince me.

We're still in the best situation proprietary gaming on Linux has ever been in. I don't see STRAFE-style projects that come from crowdfunding going away anytime soon either even if future AAA titles are not quite as guaranteed.
As for this game specifically, those developer responses seemed like Linux isn't even for certain... I'm assuming they originally promised it so that reply doesn't sound good.

This is a question with a very simple answer, if you don't want to use Linux as you're main gaming OS don't use Windows use Android use a peasant box or whatever. Real question is why does a steam survey change you're opinion on you're os can you play the games you want to play yes or no if its no then Linux is not for you.

And when you once get into that circle you realized you're not so into gaming after all.Because you're trying to keep up with possible ports, api's,Wine like solutions. That is not 'real' gaming if you ask me. When all games served at your feet and you don't have to worry about api, quality of port etc.
I've been gaming on linux exclusively since around 2007. You are talking shit. Port problems (although usually not game-breaking) are common on all patforms. Porting games after the fact is hard, especially when you're an overconfident overpaid AAA developer worth exactly shit and nothing more. CoD ports, anyone? Arkham Knight? Japanese games are notoriously bad when it comes to PC ports. There's also a number of console ports that pretty much require you to own a gamepad, but some won't even tell you that before the purchase. Ports are hard.
EDIT: Oh and you had to wait more than a year, IIRC, for GTAV. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW.
Console ports get delayed a lot.
gaming starts to matter more
The fuck does that mean. Are you just flinging important-sounding phrases/words at people? It doesn't work. That doesn't make any sense.
Just my thoughts,i'm not intend to offend anyone.
Well now I know you're just a shill and/or troll.

Pfff,i guess this needs to be answered.
First of all;if porting is not a problem then why do we get lower fps on mostly any Linux released title?Same hardware but less fps, even some games that critically goes to unplayable zone.
Second;Windows needed to wait for GTA5.But is it came as exact same visuals on Windows or is it beat the console versions by enhanced graphics? Maybe you didn't notice but we're waiting for only ports, not even improved versions.
Third;you know what it means. It means you don't need to worry about fps, which api used, you don't need to wonder about if this game will come to Linux or not.It is a certainty, why you should wonder?
I'm not a troll, even if i was a troll why should care it?Even the Linux is a threat to Windows gaming or other platforms? Why should i be a member of this site in first place? But you're the bad eggs (if you wouldn't call me as a troll i wouldn't define you but you forced me) because you're just ignoring the facts and normalize them. If you and all other users continue to normalize that performance issues than they don't even bother to make it good. They will say ; 'ahh,Linux guys. They used to get lower performance'.

To be fair: if you are a 'hardcore' (however defined) gamer Linux isn't probably the best choice at the moment. I remember that even on Ubuntu main site they used to mention that there is another operating system if one is into gaming. I love linux, i don't dual boot, i don't play Windows games and i don't play on consoles, just being a realist: if you want to play the latest titles, with the highest available performance on a PC, then Windows is the go-to platform for the time being. And it doesn't have anything to do with 'real' gaming, it is just the way things are now.

Yep,if this user share won't change i'm afraid eventually we will migrate to Windows again.
Good riddance. I suppose people (like me) use Linux based operating systems not only because of a certain market share on Steam.
If you want to do real gaming, you will need to use other platforms besides Linux. If you don't think so,ask Liam.Who also uses a console for real gaming.
Yeah, fanatics like you always exist so i'm not surprised.
Wait.... Real gaming?
Are you implying that the games I play on Linux aren't *real* games?

So, arbitrary rules that *you* made up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you want to do real Linux gaming, you need to use other hardware, like a Core i5, or i7, or even a new Ryzen, and you definitely need to run an Nvidia card.
See how that works?

Like even barely getting 30 fps from Civilization VI and try to be happy about it?With so powerful specs
Or getting some crazy fps drops on Mad Max and try to behave like 'that is normal'
No,thanks.I will pass.

That's cool. Your narrow definition of "real" gaming doesn't interest me anyway. I am curious as to why you're on GOL claiming gaming is dead though. GOL was here before the Steam revolution and I suspect it'll be here long after.
Regardless, going back to Windows? Not for me. I'd rather give up gaming.

EDIT:
I was wrong, there should be 140 millions active users.
So it give us 1 050 000 active users. It's totally not bad. :D
Real gaming... real performance... etc.
Steam has something around 14 millions active users. Linux users are in 0,75% of it.
105k active Linux users it's not bad. :)

Makes me sad. STRAFE was one of the games I'm looking forward to play the most. But well, if it's not a day-1 release changes are I will wait for a sale.

"Fanatics" tsksk. Spare us your drivel. If you are using your PC mainly for gaming: Stick to Windows for Chrissake. I use my Linux desktop for work (since I make my living on being a developer), but I also like a hearty game every now and then. Matter of fact: I have way to many games on my pile of shame. And a drop from 0.81% to 0.78% just doesn't make my heart race...

Yeah no kidding. Sometimes it's hard to tell what side these naysayers are even on.
You don't HAVE to use Linux to support it. If it's not cutting it for your gaming needs and you really want to play windows games then go ahead and use windows. Some of us still prefer to stick to Linux because of the OS itself, I personally don't know how anyone can stand to use a windows machine for more than a few minutes, but that's just me.
It doesn't mean we're a sinking ship just because your particular needs aren't being met. If you think we're in bad shape now then I'd hate to see what you would have thought a a few years ago. Valve never intended to make steamOS/Linux explode in popularity. Slow and steady was their game plan from the very beginning (they even wrote about it but of course nobody listens). They're still in it for the long haul.
If you do stick with windows that's fine, but I hope you still support Linux and will take the time to let developers know.

One thing before war starts: these famous market share.
Let's do the math, according to (iirc) 2013 stats:
1.2% Linux gamers, ~80 millions Steam accounts, so barely 900.000 linux gamers
2015 stats (iirc, again, but the figures are roughly the sames):
0.92% Linux gamers, ~140 millions Steam accounts, so, barely, roughly 1.5 million linux gamers.
The fact is that if market share seems to drop, due to the fact Steam users growing faster than Steam Linux users, doesn't mean that we're less to play and use Steam. So, in fact, the Steam Linux users number is growing. Not as fast as the "global" Steam users, but growing.
Remember how in the late 90's Linux users were few, really few. Nowadays, it accounts for between 50-75 millions people on the damn planet. And I'm not talking about servers or smartphones using an outdated linux kernel with a proprietary userland, nope, just desktop. We've already won on the other markets.
Mind me, I'm using Linux since 20 years (and, beside the occasionnal Active Directory, never used Windows. never used it on *my* desktop or laptops, in 20 years, because I never needed it), it's even (75% part, I also happen to work with *BSD and proprietary network stuff (Cisco, Juniper)) my job since ten years, I don't care about day-1 AAA games. I've been able to play Mad Max III at a steady 60 fps, 6 monthes later so I grabbed it at a sale, I'd like to play an old school FPS like Strafe one day. Even if it's not day-1. As long as it is available for my operating system. If it's not: "no tux, no bux", period. But being treated as second-class citizen, reading dubious arguing about the virtues of Proprietary Operating System X©, knowing that we rule this world from New-York Stock Exchange to the smartphone in your pocket, no, thanks.
Please excuse the english butchering, as it's not my mother's tongue, and as comments series (especially when it involves "fanatics", "ayatollahs" and other stupidities) like this one really get on my nerves.
