STRAFE [Steam, Kickstarter] looks fantastic as an FPS and a throwback to some retro shooters, but sadly it has seen a delay. I reached out to the publisher Devolver Digital to ask about the Linux release as it wasn't mentioned in the announcement.

When asking if "PC" meant Windows in the recent announcement, or if they were including Linux in that and here's the reply:

QuoteSTRAFE will hit PC via Windows and Mac, at least first.

I did additionally ask if there was any release date now set for the Linux version:

QuoteNot at the moment, no.

STRAFE was funded on Kickstarter with $207,847 pledged to make this retro throwback FPS happen. I'm really excited to play it, so hopefully we don't get let down.

Quoting: lidstahOne thing before war starts: these famous market share.

Let's do the math, according to (iirc) 2013 stats:

1.2% Linux gamers, ~80 millions Steam accounts, so barely 900.000 linux gamers

2015 stats (iirc, again, but the figures are roughly the sames):

0.92% Linux gamers, ~140 millions Steam accounts, so, barely, roughly 1.5 million linux gamers.

The fact is that if market share seems to drop, due to the fact Steam users growing faster than Steam Linux users, doesn't mean that we're less to play and use Steam. So, in fact, the Steam Linux users number is growing. Not as fast as the "global" Steam users, but growing.

This a thousand times. It seems to be the one thing people always forget; just because the percentage drops, does not mean the overall amount of Linux gamers has dropped.

I think we could say Leopard was really unfortunate in using the words "real gaming"...

Also, it's not even a statistic of how many Linux gamers there are, but a statistic of how many got and answered the hardware survey.

Anyway, yay Strafe, buh not knowing about the Linux version.
To be fair, they never promised, only said that they would look into it later, so there's no real change.

That's cool. Your narrow definition of "real" gaming doesn't interest me anyway. I am curious as to why you're on GOL claiming gaming is dead though. GOL was here before the Steam revolution and I suspect it'll be here long after.

Regardless, going back to Windows? Not for me. I'd rather give up gaming.

I think giving up a few FPS and having to wait for some ports is way acceptable regarding how using Windows has become a pain in the ass. And as others have said there are more games available already that I will ever be able to play, I'm a real gamer and doing real gaming on my Linux rig ^_^

I nearly got my brother in law to switch to Linux yesterday when his Windows 10 threw an unexpected update at him without any prior warning and his machine was stuck for 30 minutes before he got to kill the PC altoghether (he needed to leave for work and wouldn't let it run all day). It's maturing and I think I'll get him out of the dark side within a couple of months now :D
