I've debated for quite some time setting up my own more generalised Linux and technology site, so screw it, I did it. Announcing LifeOnLinux.com as a new experiment!

To be clear: GamingOnLinux will stay exactly the same and keep improving as it always does. LifeOnLinux costs nothing extra to run and it's mainly an experiment right now.

It will have the same basic principles as GOL itself: No bullshit, no adverts, no clickbait, SSL for everyone for free and it will keep things simple and to the point as much as possible. It will accept user contributed articles too, just like GOL does.

I know what you're thinking: Oh no, not another site! Well, GOL has never really covered general Linux news. Times when I do we often get complaints that it's not specifically Linux gaming related and I have to tell people we sometimes cover stuff not directly about Linux + Gaming. Now I don't have to.

Also, since I am only one person, burn-out is a very real thing I have to deal with in regards to GOL directly. You might think taking on another workload would be idiotic, but there's a reason behind my madness. Distractions/new stuff actually helps me focus - really it does. It allows me to cool off from GOL for some moments to do something else, then come back fresh each time.

It's actually using the exact same codebase as GOL itself, so all improvements for LifeOnLinux directly benefit GOL and vice versa. For our code, it's only going to be a good thing, as it gives me a further reason to continue cleaning it up and improve it. Our code has already come along in many areas, thanks to needing changes to accommodate it running on an additional site.

Gaming news is usually very time consuming, considering I test most of what I write about first, so a single game can end up taking half a day away and more. This is quite different to normal Linux news, since a lot of it is very generic in the way that it won't take me many hours of repeated testing to write about. This is why it hopefully won't take much time away from GOL at all, so you need not be worried. I've actually built up a reasonable list of RSS feeds to follow for news, so hopefully it will have a good bit of content each week, likely not as much as GOL though!

About Logins: For now, logins are entirely separated. Making a login bridge between the two is being researched and something may come of it eventually.

Note: Just like GOL, it will rely on users sending in news and tips, especially since writing news not focused around gaming is something new to me.

Finally, GOL is still my main focus, LifeOnLinux is currently being done "as and when" and most importantly: for fun. Anyone is free to contribute to it remember, just as anyone can contribute here on GOL. Let's see what happens, even if it goes down burning it will have been fun to try.

Seems 40+ people already follow the RSS feed on Feedly, I can recommend Feedly to keep your RSS all in one place :)

About the theme...

I kind of find it hard to look at. I don't think I have colour blindness, but just for reference, this might be worth a look.

Quoting: liamdawejust in reality it is only 1-2 minutes of people's time until then, so while a very minor bother
You and I have very different views on the costs and botheration factor inherent in setting up Yet Another Account, apparently. :)

Nice Liam, will check back on that site now too ;)
For the login stuff, I am a big fan of OpenID, so maybe you can lookup that and integrate it in both sides. Would be awesome.
Other than that, good idea and I hope you get it all managed.

I'm really looking forward to this, Liam. There are a lot of general Linux blogs out there, but I've yet to find one that I enjoyed reading day-after-day for any length of time. I think Life on Linux will change all that!

For someone who just had Lasik surgery, I applaud the color scheme on the new site. Damn white ends up being bluish blinding hell to me at the moment!

Liam,

Can we get a permanent link at the top of GoL for this site? I had to dig thru the articles to remember the name for it.

Quoting: calfretLiam,

Th last news is from a week ago and the top line of the site reads "PSA: We are winding operations down to focus on GamingOnLinux. This site was a fun idea, but time is short and GamingOnLinux is more important."...
