A Linux version of EVERSPACE [Steam] might finally be on the horizon, as the developers shared more details on the bug and a user on Steam pointed the developer to a possible workaround for now.

They seem to be having an issue with dynamic directional lighting for translucent materials where objects are lit by non-directional light. After they shared an example project showing the Unreal Engine bug, a user on Steam pointed them to an option they can use.

The developer is now saying:
QuoteHi, thank you very much for the tip! Our technical/lead 3d artist played around with it a bit, and although he is not totally happy with the results, I think we could go with it for the Linux version. We're still hoping for a proper fix, but I guess Linux players would rather have the game with a reduced graphics quality than not have the game at all. So it looks like we're picking up the ball again, thank you!

A game that works for now with slightly reduced visuals until Epic Games pull their finger out to fix Linux issues, sure, I'm happy with that.

Really great to see good communication from a developer, to the point of providing a project showing the bug is not their end, to find a helpful user to help them work around it. Really impressed with both the developer and the helpful Steam forum user. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Oh yeah! \o/ This is so good news!
Having this issue fixed by a workaround is much better than having no game at all.
The Linux backers have been longing for Everspace since they announced to have a Linux version playable since beta. As we know this didn't work out due to this issue.
Maybe they could have gotten this workaround some months sooner, if they would have communicated this bug earlier to the community, but I won't complain.
I hope this example also shows to other devs that the Linux community is not only loud when asking for a game on their favorite OS, but also happy to help. Just give them the chance to help out ;)

Definitely buying this if it gets a Linux version. :D

I will buy it DRM-free with a new videocard as I think my HD7770 will struggle to run this.

This is fantastic news to hear!
Liam, please let us know if/when Everspace sees a linux release, as it will be an instant purchase from me.

What surprises me is that they have a Mac version available. With OpenGL being much better on Linux, it's not very likely that it is a problem with Unreal OpenGL support. Makes you wonder what exactly causes this problem.

Anyway, maybe supporting this game will help fix some of the most obvious problems for the future.

Because there is no problem , Linux version is left for far last , just find excuses.
First was a "translucent materials" , second Nvidia driver(o'rly , what about AMD/Mesa..) , third waiting answer from Epix. And 6 months nobody found this-"Try to use "Surface ForwardShading" under Material Properties-> Translucency -> Lighting Mode".
Ieep they working hard on Linux , believe me :).
Sorry for black view , I support this game in kickstarter , but after these silly excuses i do not believe there will be Linux version.

Engine issues are not excuses. You're choosing a very bleak view to stick to.

They've been openly communicating about the issues and now someone pointed them to a possible workaround. It's a workaround that as quoted, isn't actually a final solution.

Coders don't know everything, anything can be overlooked.

I fucking-enjoy it on a mystery-non-linux OS using GOG Galaxy!
I both hope that Everspace (and Galaxy) will come to gnu/linux to avoid me too many of this bullshit dualboot.

With coop possibilities, Everspace would be so fun and a milestone for future space video games!
