Mesa, the open source graphics drivers have been updated in the last few days to 17.0.5 (announcement here) and it contains a bunch of fixes.

No major additions here, since it's a point release where it mainly gets bug fixes. The more exciting stuff is due on May 5th as per the release schedule. While it has nothing truly major, it's a good idea to update for more stable drivers (if you're using Mesa that is).
The Intel drivers seemed to get the most fixes, while Mesa itself gained some fixes for the API validation. They also fixed up several configure and build errors for those of you manually compiling.

I used following article to use a Mesa PPA that was more official, and was wondering if it's being maintained or not?

Well, just looking at the PPA, there is a mesa 17.1 release candidate that has been uploaded three days ago.
As for the "most official" part, I find it harder to find more official than a release announcement, but perhaps you were referring to the way of getting it on ubuntu?

Please excuse me if this is a stupid question but why are they building Mesa 17.1 when latest stable release is 17.0.5? Shouldn't they work to build 17.0.5 instead?

Not sure howto get this on Manjaro, think I just have to wait a few days until someone tests it and pushes it as update.
