Overload [Steam, Official Site], the six-degree-of-freedom shooter that really surprised me for how good it felt has a major update.
The new updates adds in a new challenge mode level, which adds in natural ice caves and I have to say it does look fantastic. I liked it so much I decided to capture some of the frantic gameplay on this level:
As seen in the video they also added in a new kamikaze robot to challenge your piloting skills, it will charge at you in the hopes of doing some serious damage. They are a pretty fun addition and really do help to make it feel a bit more frantic and has helped to up the fun factor quite a bit.
For the achievement hunter, they've added in 11 for you to hunt down and complete to get the most out of the experience.
They also did many smaller changes, so it's worth looking over the release notes.
The game is in Early Access, but it's surprisingly well polished for such an early game. Well worth taking a look for sure. It's a really good update and the game performs incredibly well.

Ahhh. I'd forgotten about this one. I've got the "Overload: Teaser Demo," I think, but have yet to play it. At some point I'd love to see a comparison/overview of each of the six-degrees-of-freedom games available on Linux. (I know of three others: Descent: Underground, Sublevel Zero and NeonXSZ spring to mind, though there may be others, I'm sure.)
I've always understood the "6 degrees . . ." to be UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, FORWARD, BACK. Maybe it would have been more accurate if they'd called it "6 directions of freedom."

I didn't watch the video, so maybe something's missing, but if it's like Descent (as I expect it is), you have x, y, z location as well as pitch, roll, and yaw.

X, Y and Z are each counted as two in this case.

I had it assigned to the 7 and 9 keys on my keypad in descent. (slide up and down - +, forward and back were 0 and . 1 and 3 for slide left and right, 2/4/6/8 for other rotations.

Uh you know right that Overload is being made BY THE MAKERS OF DESCENT right? Parallax Software split into Volition Inc and Outrage. Parallax Software was started in 1993 by Matt Toschlog and Mike Kulas. Mike then started Volition Inc, before leaving recently to start working on Overload. If anything it's the new Descent that's ripped off Descent. Mike Kulas is just making the game he's always made. Overload is the true heir to the Descent franchise. The new Descent game is some guys that got a license from Interplay, it has nothing to do with Descent. On another note, I'll add that I met Mike Kulas online back in the early 2000s on the Freespace 2 forums. He is one of the loveliest guys in the industry. Just a really nice guy.
